GEN Schools believe that this innovation makes a great contribution to the main purpose of the school and to prepare students for the future. GEN Schools think teachers act as facilitators and ask students the right questions, allowing them to wonder, imagine and take action. They observe that it creates internal motivation in students and they become more eager to learn.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

GEN Schools educate students from today for the future, at least 12 years later. However, while game-changing changes occurred every 100 or 50 years in the past, today they have begun to occur every 5 to 10 years. Therefore, GEN Schools offer a course that allows the students to imagine the future and design positive future scenarios in order to make our students flexible and prepared for changes.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

GEN Schools' administrators and teachers designed the program, which they started to offer foresight course to middle school and high school students as a weekly lesson as of the 2020-2021 academic year. The program was designed by the Teach The Future (TTF) Organization. The of the course is "Future Knowledge" and ''Gelecek Bilgisi'' in Turkish for to 5th, 6th and 9th and 10th grade students. And the school use the English and Turkish version of ''Future Thinking Playbook'' written by TTF, as the source of this course.

How has it been spreading?

Turkiye Hub located under the roof of Teach The Future organization, explained this example to 22 active hubs in many countries around the world. And this application is currently in the process of spreading in many countries.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

You can meet with GEN Schools's managers and TTF Türkiye HUB officials.

Implementation steps

Instructor Training By Futurists
At the beginning of each academic year, during the teacher in-service seminar period, GEN Schools ensure that futurists give general information about futurism to all teachers and administrators in the school. Then, GEN Schools offer a 6-week, approximately 24-hour training to teachers who want to teach this course. In this way, GEN Schools enable them to master the subject and to examine the book to be used in the course and the training plan to be implemented.
Informative Seminar For Students And Parents
GEN Schools organize a seminar to introduce this course to students in the first week of school and to parents in the first month. In this seminar, futurists accompany teachers and school administrators. They give brief information about Futurism, and then GEN Schools express the achievements and the aim for with this course.
Distribution of Future Thinking Playbook to Students
Teach The Future Türkiye Hub Team Member Kamil Kazım Sarı translated Future Thinking Playbook into Turkish. GEN Schools provide both Turkish and English versions to the students. In this way, GEN Schools aim to help them learn English terms related to futurism.
Weekly Lessons
In order for the students to graduate from GEN Schools by gaining future awareness and future literacy skills, GEN Schools allocate 1 class hour (40 minutes) in the weekly class schedule of the 5th, 6th and 9th and 10th grade students for this course.
March 1st Future Day Celebration
Every year on March 1, GEN Schools attend conferences of professional futurists around the world and discuss the future with other students working in the field of futurism around the world. GEN Schools also organize different events for March 1 every year. For example, they publish the book 2040 Future Scenarios and organize a theater show called Future Hero.
