Well Schools

Creating the happiest, healthiest schools in the world

We know that unhealthy, unhappy children don’t learn. A Well School places just as much emphasis on health and wellbeing as it does on academic performance. It understands that children and young people are more effective learners when they are happy and healthy, and that they must take care of their staff and their pupils wellbeing to create a culture that allows everyone to reach their potential

We want to see a system that takes a whole child, whole school and whole community approach to improving the life-chances of every child with a particular emphasis on those that suffer the greatest inequalities, have poor experiences of life at school and are seeing a decline in their physical and mental health.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We know that unhealthy, unhappy children don’t learn. We have a physical and mental health crisis with children and young people and our education system isn’t developing the skills and characteristics they need for today’s society and the world of work. At the same time, staff are leaving the profession and suffering from similar health and wellbeing challenges.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Whole school review process for schools and trusts, built on the evidence of what works from research and the education sector, and then shared, developed and implemented through networks and communities of practice. This is all supported through a website, guidance, resources and people that make it happen.

How has it been spreading?

Started with 30 founding schools and now in excess of 2,500 schools across the UK
