The war has not only devastated education across Ukraine, but stalled its transition towards a modern, competency-based system. Too many young people are growing up without the confidence, autonomy, leadership readiness and global outlook that Ukraine will urgently need from its next generation. Svitlo exists to bridge that gap. Our curriculum is designed to nurture both immediate wellbeing and long-term potential. By combining high-quality online education with a warm, globally connected community, we ensure students feel genuinely supported - while empowering them to grow into the social, political and business leaders Ukraine will need to rebuild and flourish. At Svitlo, students are not passive recipients of support; they are active co-creators of Svitlo’s future, shaping programmes and governance alongside trustees and volunteers. This is what makes our model exceptional: it transforms education for young people affected by conflict and displacement into a platform for agency, ambition and lasting impact. Svitlo's innovation demonstrates that even in the most challenging circumstances, education can be a profound source of hope. We would like to see an education system - in Ukraine and beyond - where young people affected by conflict are not defined by their circumstance. Where students leave education not only with qualifications, but with the confidence, skills and global outlook to lead.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Svitlo Education was created in response to the profound disruption of learning caused by the war in Ukraine. Millions of children face repeated interruptions due to displacement, damaged infrastructure and ongoing insecurity. With nearly half of students experiencing limited or no access to consistent classroom education, there was an urgent need for a reliable, high-quality alternative that could restore continuity and hope.
Svitlo was designed to meet this need by providing a stable, supportive learning environment accessible from anywhere. Beyond simply replacing missed lessons, we aim to address the broader impact of the crisis on young people’s confidence, sense of belonging and future prospects. The Svitlo model combines free online education with a strong social structure, ensuring that students remain connected to both learning and a wider global community.
From the outset, four core objectives shaped this innovation. First, to offer stability and demonstrate international solidarity during a time of uncertainty. Second, to provide consistent access to high-quality English-language education, opening pathways to global opportunities. Third, to expand students’ development beyond the traditional Ukrainian curriculum, introducing critical thinking, communication and leadership skills. Fourth, to equip learners with the practical tools, confidence and experience needed to navigate higher education and employment in an unpredictable future.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

At Svitlo School, this innovation comes to life through a flexible, student-centred model designed to support both immediate wellbeing and long-term potential for learners in Ukraine. Our approach combines high-quality online education with a nurturing, globally connected environment, ensuring students feel supported, inspired and empowered.
The curriculum is structured across six core areas: English, Creativity, STEM, Humanities, Careers and Wellbeing. All our lessons run from 15:00 Kyiv time and on weekends, so that the pupils can attend their main Ukrainian school in the morning first. Junior students (ages 10–13) focus on building strong English foundations and confidence in learning, while senior students engage with a broader range of subjects - taught in English - that foster critical thinking, leadership and academic curiosity. This progression prepares them to contribute meaningfully to Ukraine’s future recovery and development over the next decade.
By 2025, students could choose from 134 lessons spanning diverse topics such as Philosophy, Coding, Public Health, Debates, Investing and Yoga. This breadth allows learners to explore interests beyond the traditional curriculum while developing practical, future-ready skills.
A defining feature of Svitlo is its global volunteer network. Educators and professionals from around the world deliver lessons in English, exposing students to international perspectives and real-world insights.

How has it been spreading?

Within Ukraine, Svitlo's Ukrainian branch has actively supported expansion through targeted webinars delivered directly to schools across localities, helping new students join the network with confidence.
Each summer, our most dedicated and proactive students are rewarded with two weeks at partner summer schools in the United Kingdom, United States or Switzerland. These placements offer far more than language learning - students improve their English, feel genuinely safe and supported, forge lasting international friendships and build positive memories that sustain them through the long, challenging winter months back home. For many, this opportunity becomes a defining source of motivation.
Our international partnerships have also been instrumental in deepening our impact. Our partnership with Citibank has enabled the expansion of Svitlo's impact and new initiatives, "This grant is our investment in the future of Ukraine, which will be shaped by the next generations. We believe that education can open new doors for children and build success stories," Alexander McWhorter, Chairman of the Board of Citi Ukraine.
In 2025 alone, we provided over 4,300 online lessons to 919 students, supported by more than 65 teaching volunteers drawn from 18 countries worldwide - the majority of whom have been with Svitlo since 2022. This consistency reflects both operational excellence and capacity to mobilise a truly global volunteer network.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Svitlo demonstrated strategic responsiveness by identifying a critical need among older students. Internal surveys revealed that 64% were concerned about accessing university or employment due to the ongoing war, particularly without Svitlo’s continued guidance. For many, Svitlo had become their primary community for friendship, personal growth and social connection- relationships and support systems they were reluctant, and often unprepared, to leave behind at 18.
In response, Svitlo expanded its focus from academic provision to career readiness and practical experience, ensuring its programmes remain relevant to students’ evolving needs.
One key innovation was the decision to actively involve students in Svitlo operations. Students now contribute to Svitlo’s social media channels, help organise community events and support day-to-day school operations. Another flagship initiative is Svitlo’s Reading Buddies programme, a peer-led model that develops both learning and leadership skills. Senior students are trained as ESOL tutors and deliver online English reading sessions for younger students.
Building on this success, Svitlo launched its first Graduate Camp held in London in summer 2025, a major milestone in its career-readiness strategy. Designed for 18-20 year olds, the camp immersed students in professional environments through visits to 13 global organisations such as Google and LinkedIn. These experiences provided practical insight into career pathways.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Getting started with Svitlo is straightforward. At the beginning of every academic term, we host a Shopping Week - a dedicated period where prospective students are warmly invited to sample a wide range of classes from across our curriculum, completely free of obligation. It's the perfect opportunity to explore what Svitlo has to offer, meet our volunteers and find the subjects that spark your interest before making any commitment.
For those wanting to learn about other aspects of Svitlo we also run introductory webinars for initiatives such as Reading Buddies. These sessions are a great way to understand what Svitlo offers and ask any questions in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Implementation steps

Step 1: Join Svitlo and Start Learning
Begin your journey at Svitlo School by joining classes and meeting teachers and peers. Our focus for younger pupils (ages 10-13) is on building strong English skills. Students are grouped by ability to support their learning, while also having opportunities to join mixed-ability lessons across a range of subjects: English Acquisition, humanities, STEM and Creativity.
Step 2: Build Confidence in English
Students build confidence in English through regular Svitlo class attendance, improving their ability to understand, communicate and express ideas. At the same time as they move into the senior cohort (ages 14-17) their learning expands to explore future interests and career pathways.
Subjects include language acquisition, humanities, STEM, Creativity, Careers and Wellbeing.
Step 3: Become an Active Student & Step into Leadership Opportunities
As students progress, they are encouraged to take on greater responsibility within the Svitlo community. The Student Council, made up of elected and volunteer students, works closely with the Svitlo team to support peers, assist teachers and help shape school life.
Through our Language and Leadership Programme, funded by Nova Ukraine, older students are trained to lead online English classes for younger learners, developing real teaching skills while younger students build confidence.
Step 4: Access International Opportunities
Each summer, our most dedicated and proactive students are rewarded with something truly extraordinary, two weeks at our partner summer schools in the UK, USA or Switzerland.
Beyond the activities, friendships and cultural experiences, summer schools give students a chance to feel safe, recharge and carry something positive with them through the winter ahead in Ukraine.
Step 5: Join the Svitlo Graduate Programme
