About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created Hygiene Hero Cup to make hygiene education more engaging and accessible for students in underserved communities. Traditional methods often fail to connect with youth, so we used game-based learning to promote lasting behavior change and support global health outcomes.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Hygiene Hero Cup is a 3D game for Android tablets where players take on challenges to learn handwashing, foot care, and shoe-wearing habits. It includes gameplay, skill-based interactions, and visualizations of hygiene impact. A guided lesson plan and drawing-based reflection help assess student learning in a classroom workshop.

How has it been spreading?

We piloted Hygiene Hero Cup in Accra, Ghana, in collaboration with the World Shoe Fund. The success of this playtest has sparked interest in expanding its use, and we’re now exploring opportunities to share the game with health educators and organizations focused on hygiene education.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try Hygiene Hero Cup, download the game APK and follow the installation guide (PDF and video included). We also provide the full lesson plan used in playtesting. You can contact us to explore partnership or implementation support.

Implementation steps

Install the Game on Tablets
Download the APK file and follow the video or PDF installation guide provided. Ensure the Android tablet has adequate storage and permissions to install third-party apps. Test the game to confirm it runs properly before use. To download the APK and workshop guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PGSJJehighRBLAazgNdbeUkUlC40LSiC/view?usp=drive_link
Prepare the Classroom
Print the lesson plan and gather any needed materials (drawing paper, markers, etc.). Arrange the classroom to support both gameplay and group discussion. Brief students on the activity and its goals.
Facilitate Workshop
Before the gameply, introduce students to pre-session assessment to understand their prior knowledge about hygiene.
Guide students through the game, encouraging them to engage with the hygiene challenges. Provide support as needed and observe how they interact with key learning moments like handwashing and shoe-wearing scenarios.
Conduct Reflection Activity
After gameplay, use the drawing-based reflection session included in the lesson plan. Ask students to illustrate what they learned or how they would use hygiene practices in their daily life. (Optional) Facilitate a group discussion to reinforce key messages. Ask students what surprised them, what they learned, and what habits they might change going forward. Connect game moments to real-world practices.
