Our education system is still focused on a top-down method of rote learning. This leads to a lack of real world skills as the student grows up. Our intention with ZubHub is to help promote activity-based learning which will hopefully give rise to a more learner-centric, interactive mode of education.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The current education system is based on a top-down method of learning which rewards rote learning and fails to build essential 21st century skills in children. Underprivileged children are the biggest victims of this as they lack access to alternative resources. We have created ZubHub, a free and open-source platform, as a potential solution for this.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

On ZubHub, any child anywhere can join, get inspired by our collection of activity ideas and projects, build with low-cost materials and tools available around them, and share their creations with others. It is accessible on the web, and development for mobile devices is a work in progress. It can be made available as a customized version for a school, library, hackerspace, or educational organization. It can be hosted in low or no internet bandwidth locations. ZubHub's design takes inspiration from the principles of the 4Ps of creative learning - Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play. It engages children and educators in working on projects they are passionate about with their peers and nurtures a playful environment where they can feel safe and creative. It envisions a Wikipedia-like online, collaborative community of children and educators built around an encyclopedia of playful activities. With ZubHub, we hope to cultivate in children the essential 4C skills of the 21st century.

How has it been spreading?

After working on it for over a year, we debuted ZubHub in 2021 as a free and open-source platform. We have conducted multiple workshops where we introduced the platform among learners and educators. We have had nearly 5000 users on ZubHub over the past two and a half years. Our supplementary activities have reached over 17000 learners and educators in 40 underserved regions. Over the next few years, we aim to add 8000 to 10000 new users on it and set up 100 new hubs in various schools, libraries and other such educational spaces.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Our central ZubHub, which is solely focused on “low-cost” creative project-based learning, is completely free to use. It can be found here: https://zubhub.unstructured.studio/

We also offer a customized version of ZubHub, so that one can create their own online creative community. You can mail us at hello@unstructured.studio for more information.
