About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created the Regenerative Futures Program as a response to the most pressing challenge facing education: How might we build the capacity of young people to engage with complexity, embrace diversity, and develop collaborative compassionate responses to real-world challenges, while remaining emotionally grounded? We recognised that young people are growing up in an age of hyperchange and disruption, where their lives are shaped by overlapping crisises, like climate change, social polarisation, and deepening inequity. At the same time, we understood that education is both complicit in sustaining these degenerative patterns and a powerful force for transformation. In designing the program, we sought to move beyond outdated narratives of education that are competitive, extractive, and economistic towards a model that is collaborative, regenerative, and holistic. We saw the creation of the program as an opportunity to live out our school mission - the purposeful development of creative, compassionate, skilful, and resilient young people who can thrive in an ever-changing world - and establish a community learning hub where students, educators, families, and partners collaborate on projects, build and share knowledge, and model more sustainable and regenerative ways of living.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Regenerative Futures Program is a year-long interdisciplinary experience for Year 10 students. Its design integrates disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies with project-based learning, placing strong emphasis on personal development and social-emotional learning. Students work on projects from creek restoration and wildlife conservation in the school’s reserve to cultivating seasonal produce and growing food for the community. Each project extends learning beyond the classroom into ecological and social systems, deepening systems thinking, futures inquiry, and purposeful action. The program culminates in an extended personal project to address a local challenge.

A unique learning precinct with flexible learning spaces, farms, and a wildlife reserve supports the program. At its heart is the Futures Studio, a living-learning hub that brings regenerative design to life. The building is carbon-sequestering, solar-powered, and designed for net-zero energy and minimal waste. Its green roof supports indigenous plants and captures stormwater, providing habitat for pollinators, while aquaponics systems offer hands-on experience in closed-loop food production. Within this precinct, students live and learn in a community that models sustainable and regenerative ways of living, experiencing how design, ecology, and community intersect to shape a thriving future.

How has it been spreading?

The Regenerative Futures Program has attracted significant interest locally and globally. Educators, researchers, and school leaders regularly visit Woodleigh to learn about the program through campus tours, workshops, and conferences. Partnerships with universities such as MIT and the University of Melbourne extend its reach, advancing research into learning design, systemic approaches to wellbeing, and the development of complex competencies. The program has been featured at national and international conferences and recognised as an Inspiring Practice in the OECD Schools+ Project, with its innovative design and real-world projects inviting educators to explore sustainable and regenerative models of learning.

The program's influence extends into the community through open days, events, and projects that connect learning with place and purpose. The Futures Studio strengthens these connections as an innovation hub for learning and collaboration, highlighted by its inclusion in a showcase at the National Gallery during Melbourne Design Week. The Studio’s design enhances habitat and supports biodiversity, demonstrating how the built environment contributes to ecological health. Together, the program, its spaces, and its community embody a strong commitment to applying sustainable and regenerative principles in practice, demonstrating what education can look like when learning is deeply connected to people, place, and planet.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

The program has evolved over time in line with the principles and practices at the heart of its design - an approach to education that learns and adapts alongside the communities and ecosystems it serves. The scope of the collaborative projects has expanded in line with student interest and inquiry, as illustrated in the development of the Swap Shop, a non-profit enterprise focused on clothing and circular economy practices. The program has also developed a stronger focus on regenerative design and action, helping to shape both the learning experiences and the environments in which they occur.

The program has grown through partnerships with experts and organisations that bring new perspectives, expertise, and capabilities into the learning process. These collaborations enrich interdisciplinary learning and inquiry, creating more opportunities for students to engage with authentic contexts and emerging practices. For example, the school is part of Regen Melbourne, a collaborative network using the Melbourne Doughnut - a framework that combines social foundations with planetary boundaries - to guide regenerative action and ensure the city thrives within ecological limits while meeting human needs.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

We suggest interested people start locally by exploring the uniqueness of their place - its ecology, culture, and community relationships. We believe learning design is most powerful when it grows from the interplay of transformative learning, place-based projects, and regenerative action, weaving these elements in ways that respond to the distinctive potential of each context. It helps to begin with observation and dialogue: noticing patterns in the landscape and community, listening for what they need to thrive, and considering how learning might contribute to their health and vitality. Integrating multiple ways of knowing - scientific, cultural, and experiential - can deepen understanding and keep learning responsive to place.

From this foundation, collaboration among students, educators, and the community can bring visions to life through authentic projects that deepen relationships between people and place and help restore and renew local ecosystems and communities. Starting small and allowing initiatives to evolve through feedback and changing conditions helps them remain adaptive.

People can also contact the Woodleigh Institute, which offers workshops, programs, and partnerships to support education for human and planetary flourishing. The Institute is the home for the Australian Centre for Systems Awareness, associated with the MIT Systems Awareness Lab, and serves as a regional hub for learning about systems thinking, mindfulness, and social-emotional development.

Implementation steps

Overview
The development of initiatives like the RFP should be place-based, inclusive, and collaborative. The work is not standardised or linear, reflecting a commitment to avoiding the mechanistic, reductive approaches that have contributed to the challenges we face. We use a four-dimensional design process that is iterative, ongoing, and embraces emergence. These dimensions function as interrelated practices, allowing movement back and forth as perspectives shift and new possibilities take shape.

Create space for collective visioning. Explore possibilities for learning and living that restore vitality, strengthen relationships, and enable people and places to flourish together.
