Enabling a thriving ecosystem for systemic transformation of education to assure learning for all

Navigated Learning Collaborative

location_on United States
The focus of NLC is to empower learners across schools, universities and workplaces with a technology built that operationalises principles of learning through AI and enables a systemic framework to practice ‘navigated learning’. The platform gathers accurate data on every learner’s needs & using data science provides information and curated resources to chart a unique and adaptive learning path.

In LN, learning profile of every child in our classroom is in a single frame, enabling us to design lesson plans for each child. It enables every child to learn at their own pace & reduces paperwork.

about the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The Navigated Learning Collaborative developed out of an understanding that the current education system does not recognise that learning is complex, learners are diverse & ecosystems are intricate. It was therefore important to provide teachers with accurate data locating a student’s current learning level to help move her/him on an individualised plan to reach their learning destination.

How does your innovation work in practice?

Through collaborative learning networks, teachers are oriented on principles of navigated learning and the use of the Learning Navigator platform. At its core, navigation indicates sequencing of competencies to reach a learning goal. With support of the NLC team, teachers develop a competency framework for their curricular goals which forms the data backbone of the navigator. They can access both assessments and learning resources tagged to competencies and assign them to students through either online or offline mode based on their access to devices and connectivity. The interaction of the learner with the system creates a data activity stream. This then informs the action suggested to the teacher based on the learning principles. The navigator enables teachers to analyze data in the moment and obtain information to tailor instruction to student needs. Teachers can monitor and adjust instruction for the whole class based on data covering student engagement, performance & proficiency.

How has it been spreading?

The collaborative combines the systemic approach to transformation of public education implemented by India Education Collective and Gyan Prakash Foundation, with the data science and AI enabled Learning Navigator developed by Gooru. The implementation of the Learning Navigator was piloted in two states of India, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in 2019 through alignment with state education departments who vetted the competency framework developed by the public-school teachers and NLC team. Through partnership developed with state education department, the implementation of the navigated learning approach is being scaled. Furthermore, partner organizations working in different geographies and domains of education are being identified who are implementing the navigator in their own context.
