About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The Navigated Learning Collaborative developed out of an understanding that the current education system does not recognise that learning is complex, learners are diverse & ecosystems are intricate. It was therefore important to provide teachers with accurate data locating a student’s current learning level to help move her/him on an individualised plan to reach their learning destination.

How does your innovation work in practice?

Through collaborative learning networks, teachers are oriented on principles of navigated learning and the use of the Learning Navigator platform. All learning is broken down into its constituent building blocks; competencies. These competencies are mapped to global standards and are crosswalked between varying local standards so that there is a singular map of all competencies that can be used by anyone. Teachers can access both assessments and learning resources tagged to competencies and assign them to students through either online or offline mode based on their access to devices and connectivity. Gooru Navigator enables teachers to analyze data in the moment and obtain information to tailor instruction to student needs. Teachers can monitor and adjust instruction for the whole class based on data covering student engagement, performance & proficiency. This helps the learners navigate from the competencies they have mastered to the competencies set in their learning goals.

How has it been spreading?

The collaborative combines the systemic approach to transformation of public education implemented by India Education Collective and Gyan Prakash Foundation, with the data science and AI enabled Learning Navigator developed by Gooru. The Gooru Navigator platform, is being used by 7 million learners in 23 countries, with a focus on providing a foundational tool for anyone in the Navigated Learning Collaborative (NLC) to take it to the whole learning ecosystem. The NLC, comprises of 63 global organisations ranging from early childhood and K12 to professional learning, & skills training. They are applying this technology in their domains. In India, through partnership with state education departments, the adoption of Gooru Navigator is being scaled in rural public schools across 6 states.

They take a unique ecosystem approach to collecting student data, enabling the teacher to radically rethink the relationship between assessment and learning.

Navigate Math with Leadership Public Schools
Impact of Math Navigator in Leadership Public SchoolsNavigate Math accelerates student learning in math, backfilling 2nd-7th grade level skills and building ownership of learning. It is a course and approach that slowly transitions learning from teacher to student-directed. It is flexible, meeting students and teachers where they are in their practice, allowing for tailored implementation models based on readiness. It enhances the role of teacher with robust real-time data and research-backed learning tools to successfully differentiate their teaching and coaching. It empowers students by helping them solidify their math foundations and develop ownership of their learning.
Impact Survey with Teachers' on their assessment practices

Navigator leveraged by High School Students in Kashmir
Navigated Learning Collaborative has a partnership with Kashmir Education Initiative to implement Gooru Navigator with high school students for Math and Science.
