Lettuce and Climate change

place India

Let's Connect

Research the ideal climatic conditions to grow lettuce and study the soil ph, humidity , temperature for lettuce growth and draw inference how climate change will impact the growth of crops. The project is a collaborative effort with global schools to understand the need for working to mitigate climate change.

Target group
I want my students to have experience with the real world and think critically how they as citizens of the world should live sustainably to mitigate climate change. Each one of us is responsible for sustainable development goal achievement by altering our lifestyles and choices.Respecting our food and reducing food wastage can be imbibed when students learn how crops are grown

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

To study the impact of climate change on crops and to create awareness of how climate change might impact food production

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The project is divided into tasks
1.Study about lettuce ,climate preference, use
2.Study different available soils,Ph,temperature
3.Grow lettuce in all soils and study their growth patterns
4.Draw inference

How has it been spreading?

This project is being replicated in two more school Delhi Public Nashik and Varanasi

If I want to try it, what should I do?

You too can try using soils from your regions and grow crops to study how your region crop production will alter with climate change.Nagpur famous for oranges has virtually stopped growing oranges due to early fruit drop due to increase in temperatures over the years. You can use different soil of diffrent ph, water with salinity, filtered water and grow any crop to study the impact.

Implementation steps

LET'S CONNECT -LETTUCE AND CLIMATE CHANGE
1.Learn about lettuce , climatic condition required to grow , regions of growth , use
2.Study soils of different quality such as black, sandy, loamy, black etc-ph , minerals
3.Water analysis- salinity, turbidity
4.Use the soil samples to grow lettuce, draw hypotheses
5.Collect data -growth of roots, leaves etc in different soil samples
5.Graph representation of the data
6.Study the conclusion
7.Draw inferences to confirm the hypotheses
