Why did you create this innovation?

The foundational premise of ProFuturo, a programme by Telefónica Foundation and "la Caixa" Foundation, is that education serves as the primary driver of social progress. However, its impact is currently constrained by a "dual gap": the educational and the technological. Without structured intervention, this divide will continue to grow, making global inequalities permanent. The core challenge identified is not merely a lack of infrastructure, but a usage gap, as technology remains a source of exclusion when educators lack the specific competencies to integrate it meaningfully into the learning process.

Based on the program's Theory of Change, the intervention targets the lack of teacher qualification in underserved regions. Unlike traditional models that deliver hardware without pedagogical support, often leading to teacher frustration and equipment abandonment, ProFuturo positions the teacher as the central actor in the systemic transformation.

The main goal of its Teacher Training strategy is to transform technology into a strategic lever for educational quality, not only promoting digitalization, but also equipping teachers with 21st-century skills to create dynamic and personalized classrooms. By establishing sustainable local capacity through a continuous cycle of measurement, practice and continuous support, the innovation turns digital education into a tool for social justice, ultimately improving outcomes for millions of children.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

ProFuturo’s Teacher Training strategy addresses learning gaps and promotes quality digital education by placing teachers at the center of systemic transformation. The innovation is structured around a Competence Cycle, a continuous three‑stage process designed to respond to real classroom needs in vulnerable contexts.
MEASURING – Teachers complete a Digital Skills Self‑Assessment Tool that analyzes their level of digital competence for educational practice. The tool identifies strengths and development needs, maps proficiency levels from initial exposure to transformative use, and generates personalized profiles and practical recommendations to guide professional growth..
TRAINING – Based on diagnostic results, educators access a modular and multilingual training catalogue with over 200 courses and 2,000 hours of content, available in Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese through a dedicated digital platform. Training pathways are flexible and personalized to each teacher’s competency level.
PRACTICING – Teachers apply new strategies in the classroom using an offline‑first approach supported by portable servers and local networks, enabling high‑impact learning without internet connectivity. Teachers also access ProFuturo’s digital educational content and classroom resources to support daily teaching practice and strengthen the effective integration of technology.

How has it been spreading?

ProFuturo has expanded its footprint to 27 countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, with its headquarters based in Spain, operating through a collaborative model that brings together Ministries of Education, international organizations, and local partners. This approach has enabled the program to reach large numbers of educators and scale sustainably across diverse and vulnerable contexts.

In recent years, Teacher Training has evolved from a general resource catalogue into a Competence Cycle, shifting toward personalized professional development informed by real‑time data. Key qualitative achievements include the consolidation of the Open Model as a large‑scale, flexible, and accessible training solution; consistent improvements in teachers’ self‑perceived digital competence; high levels of teacher satisfaction; the strategic use of self‑assessment tools to guide professional growth; strengthened institutional learning based on evidence; and the expansion of the training catalogue to address emerging topics.

The Strategy 2026 roadmap focuses on consolidating high‑impact interventions through specialized schools in Mathematics, Digital Skills, and Computational Thinking. Its main goals include positioning AI as a pedagogical co‑pilot to support lesson planning and personalized learning; continuing to bridge the educational and technological “dual gap” by building sustainable local capacity and evidence‑based leadership in vulnerable environments.

ProFuturo, a programme by Telefónica Foundation and "la Caixa" Foundation, has carried out a qualitative leap in its Teacher Training Strategy, by transitioning from a centralized training catalogue to a personalized digital learning ecosystem focused on the teachers’ real needs.

A significant addition to the innovation is the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence as a "pedagogical co-pilot". This is complemented by human support networks of coaches and virtual communities.

Furthermore, the training catalogue has been expanded to include cutting-edge fields such as AI literacy and computational thinking, ensuring that educators are prepared to lead digital transformation in their local communities.

COMPETENCE CYCLE
The following steps within the Competence Cycle should be followed to ensure a personalized and systemic transformation:
Step 1: MEASURE
The process begins with the Digital Skills Self-Assessment Tool, a multilingual resource available in Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese. Educators complete a diagnostic questionnaire covering 12 competencies across three core areas: Pedagogy, Digital Citizenship, and Professional Development. This generates an individual report with personalized recommendations, establishing a professional starting point for each teacher.
Step 2: TRAIN
Teachers access a modular, multilingual catalogue of over 200 courses and 2,000 hours of training. Based on their diagnostic results, they follow customized and thematic itineraries that include pedagogical innovation, AI literacy, computational thinking, and digital mathematics. Training is delivered through self-study, on-demand calls, or microlearning formats to ensure flexibility and high completion rates.
Step 3: PRACTICE
Acquired skills are integrated into the daily classroom routine. Teachers use specialized digital resources from the different "Knowledge Schools", to personalize student learning paths. In remote contexts, this is supported by "offline-first" technology, using portable servers to create local Wi-Fi networks.
Step 4: COLLABORATE & MAINTAIN
To ensure sustainability, teachers join virtual learning communities to foster peer-to-peer exchange and receive ongoing support from local coaches. The model also integrates a generative AI to assist with technical queries and lesson planning, augmenting human agency in the classroom.
