Freedom Rhythm: E-motion Focused Movement

Syncing brainwaves, heartbeats, & lives!

Freedom Rhythm is an emotion focused movement method informed by neuroscience research. It works to amplify & share our positive emotions & expel or transform our negative emotions. It uses a variety of silks to project our emotions in a beautiful & vibrant way, creating a story that sets us free. Together we are a work of art—each silk is like a brush stroke contributing to the masterpiece.

World peace is the objective of Freedom Rhythm, & it starts by improving the brain & heart coherence of our children. This is achieved by effectively & compassionately processing our thoughts & emotions, managing them in a way that has a positive effect on our health, our behavior, & our environment. FR students will advance our world in creative ways through leadership that promotes harmony.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

It is imperative for students to learn about the incredible power of their thoughts and emotions, and how to harness them for the benefit of themselves and humanity. Thoughts and emotions are what fuel creativity. FR can be used in the classroom, PE, counseling, special ed, after-school programs, music, team-building, fine arts, community outreach, performance opportunities & family functions.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Freedom Rhythm (FR) is the first & only emotion focused movement protocol to engage the whole body, the senses, as well as the entire brain. FR is informed by the study of neuroscience & uses visualization, bilateral stimulation, positive self-affirmations, & movement with silks to help children process their emotions. Attached to the PE curriculum, FR provides instruction on SEL that is reinforced through creative movement. It helps children understand the importance of mental health & how to process their thoughts & emotions related to their life experiences & interpersonal dynamics. Our emotions possess both cognitive & physical components which is why it is primarily embedded into the PE curriculum, keeping academic instruction at the forefront. However, elements of FR are also used in the classroom as movement improves learning through the production of brain derived neurotropic factor. FR encourages teamwork & gives children performance opportunities that build their confidence.

How has it been spreading?

Children K-12 are the primary focus of Freedom Rhythm. However, it also works to benefit parents, and educational staff from teachers to administrators. FR provides professional development that aids in burn out prevention and encourages team building to improve school morale that benefits everyone. Currently, FR is being implemented throughout one of the largest school districts in Texas. As a result of its partnership with the MISSION POSSIBLE FOUNDATION, Freedom Rhythm has made its way to the state of Florida! It is also in collaboration with the JAM 4 HUMANITY project. https://missionpossiblefoundation.org/about-us/

Implementation steps

Acquire Silks
There are three types of silks that are used in Freedom Rhythm. The streamers, the flags, and the hand-kites. Ideally, there is one streamer for each child, one flag for each child, and two hand-kites for each child.
Freedom Rhythm PE Protocol
The Freedom Rhythm protocol is a copy-righted & trademarked publication. This protocol begins with 5-10 minutes of psychoeducation on various mental health & SEL topics. It is then followed by various visualizations related to the teaching. These visualizations are then projected into emotion-focused-movement. The next part is aimed at physical fitness & creative movement. Finally, the last part of the class is geared toward group interaction. Each exercise ends with positive self-affirmations.
School Counseling
Freedom Rhythm has a unique protocol that can be used individually or in a group by school counselors. Various visualization prompts that promote healing though bilateral-stimulation are provided to students who draw out their experience with colored pencils. This is also accompanied by projective movement using silks to help release congested emotions. Counselors work with students to help change maladaptive trauma narratives to healing narratives that promote peace.
Music
Freedom Rhythm has its own musical repertoire with lyrics that promote self-love, compassion, peace, and harmony. This music is used for performances and it is also part of the Power Rhythm curriculum that is embedded into the classroom environment. Please see the children's latest music video entitled: I BELIEVE. I BEHAVE. I BECOME! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yClRw6-J7ro
Classroom: Power Rhythm
Freedom Rhythm capitalizes on the fact that movement facilitates learning through the production of brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). To enhance learning, Freedom Rhythm has created several short Power Rhythms that include hand claps and chants that re-energize the students during quick classroom breaks. These short chants include positive affirmations and take less than one minute to perform. They are taught during PE and are brought back to the classroom environment.
Freedom Rhythm World Competition
Freedom Rhythm has partnered with JAM 4 HUMANITY to create their own world competition that brings children together from across the globe. The mission is unification and appreciation of different cultures, while Helping Unite Mankind Against Nicotine in The Youth. This is a music & dance based initiative that involves the whole community. Students who submit their work become part of Bright Minds Films, youth-created music videos & public service announcements.
Team Building
Freedom Rhythm is used as a team building exercise to promote morale and esprit de corps for teachers and students. High school clubs such as student council, speech & debate, drama, dance, and athletics can benefit from Freedom Rhythm team building!
Professional Development & Parent Involvement
Freedom Rhythm also works to benefit educational staff from teachers to administrators. FR provides professional development that aids in burn out prevention & encourages team building to improve school morale for students. Moreover, Freedom Rhythm has been used for family nights wherein parents, teachers, & children dance with silks to promote unity.
