Writerz Room

Expanding access to research, writing, and social-impact education for youths worldwide.

Writerz Room equips students, especially those who lack institutional support, with free and accessible pathways to learn research, writing, and advocacy. Shaped through mentorship from the Ban Ki-moon Foundation, we help youths use their voice and skills to influence policy, drive social change, and lead community transformation.

Target group
We hope to see more students in the Global South able to access guidance, mentorship, and opportunities regardless of background. By giving young people the tools to write, think critically, and engage with real issues, Writerz Room hopes to help shift education toward empowerment, where students feel capable of contributing to societal change.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Writerz Room was created because many students have the passion to pursue their dreams, whether through scholarships, academic writing, or advocacy, but often lack access to mentors, high-quality guidance, or even basic exposure to opportunities. Growing up without networks, research support, or essay mentorship makes it difficult for young people to compete fairly with students from well-resourced schools.

This platform was created as a space where students could access the type of support many wishes they had, like peer mentorship, clear resources, and a community that doesn't gatekeep educational opportunities.

Writerz Room was built to make opportunity discovery and writing support accessible for students regardless of financial or academic background. By combining writing, critical thinking, and early exposure to social-impact topics, we aim to empower students to engage with real-world issues and become more informed, confident changemakers within their communities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Writerz Room currently functions as an online platform where students can access opportunities and receive personalised writing support. Our community includes a growing database of scholarships, essay competitions, and international programs curated specifically for youth, alongside free feedback services for academic essays, competition submissions, and advocacy writing.

We also publish content through our Substack, which breaks down complex topics into accessible, youth-friendly pieces. This helps students connect writing to real global challenges, not just assignments.

Additionally, we are developing larger initiatives, including a research-and-writing incubator and issue-based campaigns (including having designed content on gender-based violence and completed an interview with UNFPA staff to be released on the International Day of Women). These expansions focus on helping students use writing as a tool for activism so that we are gradually building a pipeline of youth prepared to engage with societal issues.

How has it been spreading?

Writerz Room has grown through word-of-mouth, youth networks, and partnerships with student-led organisations. Many students share our database and resources with their schools, peers, and online communities, creating organic growth without the need for paid promotion.

We've also expanded through collaborations with youth organisations, academic clubs, and global student communities, which help us reach audiences who often lack access to writing mentorship or opportunity databases.

Our articles and writing guides published on our social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have further increased visibility, especially pieces focused on advocacy and social-impact writing. These resources circulate across student circles, strengthening our reach in the Global South.

Because our services are free, youth-friendly, and accessible online, the platform continues to grow steadily as students recommend it to others.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Writerz Room originally began as a simple opportunity database and free essay-feedback service. As we grew, we realised students weren’t just looking for opportunities, as they also wanted guidance on how to engage with global issues, write analytically, and participate meaningfully in youth advocacy.

In response, we first created a Substack publication focused on social-impact writing and accessible explanations of topics like gender-based violence, inequality, and global policy. Next, we started developing issue-based campaigns tied to international days, helping students connect writing with activism. Finally, we're also in early-stage development of a research incubator, designed to introduce students to structured inquiry, SDG-related writing, and mentorship.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

Join the Writerz Room platform
Create a Discord profile and join our community (https://discord.gg/XKnDGvAadM). Introduce yourself and select whether you want to be notified for any of our Discord partnerships or community activities like Question of the Day!
Access opportunities & resources
Browse our database of scholarships, essay competitions, programs, and advocacy resources. Everything is categorized, verified, and updated regularly so you can quickly find opportunities that fit your level and interests.
Submit writing for feedback
Open a ticket to upload your essays, drafts, or outlines in the mentorship channel. A trained team member or mentor will review your work and give constructive, actionable feedback focused on what categories like clarity, structure, argumentation, and impact (yes, you can select what you'd like to get feedback on!).
Join writing initiatives or campaigns
Once submissions open, participate in our Substack features, collaborative advocacy pieces, or thematic campaigns (e.g., gender equity, youth rights). This helps you practice real-world impact writing while amplifying issues you care about.
Attend sessions & micro-workshops
Join occasional online workshops, guest chats, or Q&A sessions led by students, mentors, and professionals. These sessions build skills in research literacy, academic writing, storytelling for impact, and SDG-related topics.
Take on leadership roles
If you're active and committed, you can apply to join the team in departments covering content, outreach, mentorship, tech, or marketing. Team members help run the platform, build new resources, and receive priority access to external partnerships and opportunities.
