Our innovation aims to transform education by achieving the following outcomes: (a) Enhanced learner performance across academic tasks and goals. (b) Strengthened connections and relationships within support systems, including families and communities. (c) Creation of safe and conducive learning environments for all students.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We developed this initiative in response to the alarming trends of poor educational outcomes and high dropout rates among learners, largely attributed to unsafe and unfriendly school environments marked by bullying and violence. The lack of connectivity to appropriate support systems exacerbates these challenges. Our goal is to create a nurturing educational landscape where all learners can thrive.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our model focuses on enhancing four core competencies:
(a) Connect: Establishing links to educational and support systems. This also helps them to stay connected to educators and mentors and peers.
(b) Relate: Building meaningful relationships within these systems.
(c) Learn: Gaining knowledge for academic and life success.
(d) Act: Encouraging goal-oriented performance.

In practice, participating children demonstrate significant improvements in academic performance, classroom engagement, and social behavior. Boys show increased respect and support for girls, while girls gain confidence and actively participate in class, leading to better academic outcomes. Our approach includes a comprehensive handbook and utilizes technology to enrich the learning experience.

How has it been spreading?

To date, our program has positively impacted approximately 1,500 children, enhancing their literacy skills and environmental awareness. Beneficiaries have initiated reading clubs in other schools, further spreading literacy and academic success. We have trained 250 teachers and partnered with various organizations to scale our efforts, aiming to reach 10,000 children in the next two years.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

In response to feedback and assessments, we have made several key modifications to enhance our innovation's effectiveness and reach:

(a) Expanded Curriculum: We now include critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy alongside traditional literacy skills, providing learners with a well-rounded skill set essential for success.

(b) Technology Integration: We plan to incorporate advanced technology tools, such as interactive online resources and mobile applications, making education more accessible and engaging, especially for remote learners.

(c) Community Engagement: We have strengthened partnerships with parents and community members through workshops, promoting a supportive environment that encourages family participation in education.

(d) Mentorship Programs: We introduced initiatives that pair older students or community leaders with younger learners, enhancing educational outcomes and fostering a sense of community.

(e) Monitoring and Evaluation Framework: A robust system has been implemented to track progress and outcomes, allowing for data-driven decisions and continuous refinement of our approach.

(f) Partnership Expansion: New collaborations with local NGOs, educational institutions, and government bodies enhance resource sharing and support, broadening our audience.

(g) Feedback Mechanism: We established a system for participants to share experiences and suggestions, empowering them to contribute to the program's evolution.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Impact & scalability

HundrED Academy Reviews

The most significant reason for my impact score for is its proven ability to address low literacy and numeracy levels by fostering connectedness and self-esteem among learners, as evidenced by program.

Training teachers in the strategies necessary to support students in achieving objectives, considering their regional growth needs, allows the initiative to be scaled in almost any geographic and cultural context.

Two weeks ago an organization in Lesotho (Southern Africa) requested us to present our innovation to Lesotho Teachers Association (LTA) and Lesotho Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (LCN). We made a 30 minutes presentation and they were amazed and are planning to invite us to conduct a stakeholders meeting and see how they can roll out this innovation country wide.
The friendly library concept has increased communities’ engagement and usage of library services. This concept is lacking in the country and hence our pilot project in the city of Livingstone. The design of libraries and spaces provided have, to some extent, hindered access and lowered communities’ desire to use these libraries. Therefore, there is need to promote friendly libraries in Zambia.
On World Read Aloud Day (WRAD 2024) we used social and emotional community connection and engagement skills to sensitize about the importance of writing and also we used the BIG BOOK made from local materials (wastes) to collect stories from various communities.
On World Read Aloud Day (WRAD 2024) after sensitizing communities about the importance of writing, children lifted up the BIG Pencil as a pledge of understanding importance of writing and commitment.
On World Read Aloud Day (WRAD 2024), we sensitized communities about the importance of writing using our BIG Pencil as shown in the photo. Writing is one of the skills we promote in this innovative among others.
The aim for the friendly library culture is to promote access and to stimulate individual learning, research and advancing society as a whole while contributing to national development. This can be achieved through educating, informing or entertaining a variety of audiences by promoting self-help, self-improvement and providing various learning and development opportunities.
Through this innovation we promoted reading and learning through PLAY/ FUN (Socially) to make it easier and attractive to learners/ children. The children’s corner in the Public Library was equipped with children’s educational games/ puzzles/ toys; many children started visiting the children’s corner of the library. Some visit to read, to play educational games, to research
