Why did you create this innovation?

We created this innovation because we saw that digital learning in schools was failing to deliver real impact. Many schools received computers, but usage remained extremely low. Equipment broke down and was never repaired. Teachers lacked confidence, leadership support was inconsistent, and computer rooms often stayed locked. The problem was not the technology — it was the absence of systems, ownership, and skills needed to sustain digital learning in the long term.

Our innovation was designed to fix this gap. The Lyra Community of Practice (CoP) Model empowers schools to fully own and manage their digital learning environment through ICT committees, teacher peer-learning groups, student ICT clubs, leadership support structures, and community engagement. By strengthening the whole school ecosystem, the model ensures that computers are used regularly, maintained properly, integrated into teaching, and supported by both staff and the community.

We created this approach to turn technology from a one-time donation into a sustainable learning asset that improves student skills, supports teacher confidence, and leads to long-term digital literacy outcomes—regardless of where the school is located or how many resources it has.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Lyra Community of Practice (CoP) Model operates inside the school—built around simple structures, routines, and habits that make digital learning work every day. In practice, the innovation includes:

1. An Active ICT Committee in Every School

A small team of teachers and school leaders meets regularly to:

plan computer timetables

oversee lab access and usage

track equipment status

solve day-to-day operational issues
This committee drives school-level ownership and accountability.

2. Teacher Digital Learning Circles

Teachers meet weekly in short peer-learning sessions to:

practice using Elimika and digital content

prepare ICT-supported lessons

share challenges and quick solutions
This builds teacher confidence and ensures digital tools are actually used in teaching.

3. Student ICT Clubs

Student teams help with:

basic maintenance (cleaning, organizing, shutting down machines)

motivating peers to use the lab

4. Clear Schedules and Open Computer Labs

The model introduces:

1. School-to-School Learning Through Regional CoP Meetings
The model spreads naturally through shared learning sessions where schools present their usage data, challenges, and solutions. When one school demonstrates strong results, neighboring schools quickly adopt the same routines, schedules, and maintenance systems.

2. Strong Buy-In From School Leadership and ICT Committees
Once headteachers, academic masters, and ICT committees see the results—open labs, higher usage, and fewer breakdowns—they become advocates. Leadership endorsement accelerates adoption across districts.

3. Teacher Peer Learning and Training Across Schools
Teachers trained in one school often train teachers in nearby schools. These peer-to-peer exchanges have become a practical, low-cost diffusion mechanism for the model.

4. District and Regional Government Support
WEOs, DEOs, and Regional Education Officers have shown interest in the model because it reduces ICT wastage and improves student digital literacy. Their endorsement helps introduce the model in new schools during education meetings and government planning sessions.

5. Community Visibility and Demand
Parents see their children using computers more regularly and request similar support in other schools. This community pressure encourages more schools to join the CoP structure.

1. Strengthening the ICT Committee Structure
Originally, the ICT committee focused only on lab access. We expanded its role to include:

2. Introducing Teacher Digital Learning Circles
