The CBC App

place Kenya + 1 more

Just Click

Assessment under CBC has come with a lot more work for teachers. Most teachers assess and keep records by hand, these processes are burdensome and repetitive. It is also very difficult to analyze manual records. The CBC App reduces the time teachers take to assess from hours to minutes, provides highly accurate records, and automatically generates learners' reports - all with a click of a button!

This is one of the best apps for schools in the market right now. I highly recommend it. Very detailed and precise yet simple to navigate. Fantastic!

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Kenya's new basic education curriculum has really changed the way teachers are required to teach and assess students. The new processes are burdensome and repetitive and they result in numerous inaccuracies and shortcut taking. This leads to general mutilation of the intended design of the new curriculum because overworked and demotivated teachers don’t even have the right tools to do their work.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The App contains regulator-approved assessment rubrics for each sub-strand in every learning area of the curriculum, that teachers can use as templates. Teachers have the freedom to edit the rubrics or create new rubrics for any areas they would like to assess. Instead of doing a lot of writing with all the associated problems, all that teachers have to do is perform a few clicks to keep records. The App synthesizes all the data from each assessment session and produces highly insightful reports. The CBC App generates the following reports: overall student reports, subject-specific reports, topic, sub-topic, and even activity-level reports. Reports about entire classes, entire subjects are also possible, as are reports about each teacher's assessment activity. Aggregated reports can also be produced at the school level, or even for a group of schools under an administrative unit such as for a County Government.

How has it been spreading?

Teachers are getting empowered, using their time better, and having in-depth insights about their students. School managers are having more engaging conversations with teachers based on data and making better decisions. Our goal is to have the CBC App acquired by a body like the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), which is responsible for awarding basic education qualifications in Kenya. The CBC App team would continue building the App together with KNEC over a few years until all the processes of assessment under the new curriculum are matured. The CBC App can be the tool that makes it possible for the education sector to easily keep reliable data, while at the same time significantly reducing the costs of formative assessments countrywide.
