Students can STEM immediate and future challenges while learning.

This project was conceived by Western Australian educators from several schools across the state in conjunction with the Learning Futures Network. The project aims to contribute to the immediate and future needs of Western Australia through the considered application of STEM learning principles to challenges that face all Western Australians.

The shift I’m interested in isn’t about adding more to what schools already do, it’s about repositioning students in the learning process. I’d like to see education move more consistently towards treating young people as contributors, not just learners preparing for some future point where their work might matter. STEM4Innovation showed that when students are connected to real problems and real partners, their work takes on a different quality. They ask better questions, they persist longer, and they start to see themselves as capable of having an impact now, not later. I think there’s a broader opportunity for that to become more normal, not something that sits at the edges as an enrichment experience. There’s also a systems piece. Schools, universities, industry, and government often operate in parallel, even when they’re working towards similar goals. What I’d hope to see is more porous boundaries between those spaces, where collaboration is routine and learning is shaped by what’s happening beyond the school gate. At a practical level, that would mean more learning that is outward-facing, more emphasis on problem finding as well as problem solving, and a greater tolerance for work that is iterative and unfinished. It’s less tidy, but it’s also more honest. If there’s a single thread, it’s relevance. Not in a superficial sense, but in a way that students can recognise that what they’re doing connects to the world as it is, and that they have a place within it.

About the innovation

We’ve set our challenge as: “How do we emerge from COVID-19 impacts with an education system that is responsive, adaptable, contributory, community-linked, and future-focussed?”

This program was borne out of the imagination of Western Australian educators wanting to generate authentic learning experiences for WA school students to apply STEM-inspired, curriculum-linked, design-thinking processes to solving real-world problems relating to the immediate and future impacts of COVID-19 and other community-related needs in Western Australia.

Inspired by the WA State Government and Public Sector iThink initiative we have translated their call for the combined skills and capabilities of the Western Australian community to bring WA school students to address the challenges identified.
