Starfish Labz was created to address a critical gap in the Thai education system. We observed that while numerous education reform policies have been introduced from the top down, frontline teachers often lack practical tools that are easy to understand and apply in real classroom settings. Traditional professional development programs are frequently disconnected from the realities teachers face in their daily practice. As a result, we recognized the need for a support system that is accessible and aligned with teachers’ real contexts. In its early stage, Starfish Labz was developed as an online learning platform. However, we soon realized that content alone was not sufficient. Teachers needed a professional community where they could exchange ideas and share solutions that fit their unique classroom environments. We therefore evolved the platform beyond a collection of courses into a collaborative working space that integrates workshops, peer-generated articles, and practical teaching tools designed to reflect the cultural and contextual realities of Thai schools.
In practice, Starfish Labz serves as a daily thought partner for teachers across four professional pillars, from technology to personal wellbeing. Teachers log in during free time to take short online courses, join weekly Kru Club workshops to exchange ideas with colleagues nationwide, and earn coins redeemable for additional resources. What they learn goes back into their classrooms, turning digital learning into real outcomes for students.
The platform also connects to key programmes built with government partners. Future School Leader strengthens school administrators nationwide, extending into Bangkok through Bangkok Future School, then reaching classrooms through BMA Teacher, which equips teachers to design instruction and assess student competencies across seven dimensions using the STEAM Design Process. Future School Transformation: 3R and Makerspace, with the Office of the Education Council, creates model schools developing administrators, teachers, and students through 21st century innovations. Future Youth Thailand, with OBEC and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, gives students aged 13 to 18 the tools to address real community challenges through STEAM, aligned with SDG 11 and SDG 13.
Starfish Labz has grown through a combination of organic word-of-mouth across its user network and deliberate institutional partnerships. The platform gained significant momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, and today it serves more than 427,000 members across 24,000+ schools, reaching approximately 8.4 million students through their teachers.
Central to this scale is a network of more than 50 partner organizations spanning government agencies, academic institutions, private-sector partners, and nonprofits. A notable example is the collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, which brought Starfish Labz into its Future School network. It was the first time the platform served as shared infrastructure for an entire city school system, not just individual schools.
To date, more than 14.8 million learning activities have been completed on the platform and over 640,000 certificates issued. The online community continues to grow, with more than 247,000 followers and content on teacher development and education innovation reaching over 5.7 million impressions. This reflects how educator learning extends well beyond the platform itself, spreading through the wider Thai education community.
In response to user feedback, we have made significant adaptations to our model. What began as a one-way content delivery platform has evolved into a two-way learning community. We expanded our content formats to include live workshops, expert-authored articles, and practical teaching tools designed to support real classroom implementation. We also introduced the UPRISE measurement framework to better assess meaningful learning outcomes at a deeper level. This shift moved our focus beyond simply tracking course completion rates toward measuring real behavioral changes in teaching practice. In addition, we integrated gamification features to encourage sustained engagement and broadened our learning topics to include mental health, self-care, and educational leadership. These enhancements reflect our recognition that supporting teachers in today’s rapidly changing environment requires a holistic approach to professional development.
