Rising Tide

Confront the climate crisis through an educational game in a classroom setting.

Global warming persists amidst a lack of awareness and engaging educational materials. Existing resources fail to captivate, leaving a gap in understanding and action on climate change. Through playing Rising Tide in three groups, the students learn about the short- and long-term consequences of climate change in just one to two class periods, with minimal preparation for teachers necessary.

We aim to revolutionize education by making learning engaging and interactive with our game. Focused on environmental science, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of sustainability, encouraging students to embrace and advocate for environmental stewardship from a young age, thus empowering the next generation to be proactive in solving global issues.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Students claim that they learned more about climate change at Fridays For Future events than in school. This topic is hard to cover for teachers, because there are not enough materials accessible, or they are too complicated and time consuming to use. We wanted to create a solution, to raise awareness and teach students in an interesting and easy way about global warming.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our innovation is a educational game developed using Unity, primarily for mobile devices but adaptable to XR platforms and desktops. The game's design focuses on adaptability, allowing the creation of custom versions efficiently, particularly simplifying the complex multiplayer setup essential in educational contexts.

The game uses iPads linked via a local network in schools, facilitating real-time interaction among students. This setup enhances learning through engagement and teamwork. In partnership with climate NGO Global 2000 and educational experts, we ensure the content is both engaging and educational.

The effectiveness of our solution is evidenced by enthusiastic reception and successful implementation in Austrian schools. Extensive playtests and iterative feedback from students and teachers have continuously improved the game. These iterations, guided by expert input, confirm the educational value of our game, making it an effective digital education tool.

How has it been spreading?

Our game was recently launched and handed over to the climate NGO Global 2000, marking the beginning of our marketing phase. Currently, we're expanding our reach to schools, museums, NGOs, and companies, aiming for widespread adoption and collaboration.
Over the next 2-3 years, our goals include diversifying the game's versions to meet specific partner needs. Plans are in place to develop single-player variants for company-based education and a version tailored for younger children, enhancing its accessibility and educational impact across different age groups and settings. This strategy aims not only to increase our user base but also to deepen our educational impact by adapting to diverse learning environments and requirements.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try our game, visit our demo at https://risingtide.causacreations.net/. If you're interested in adopting the solution, contact us via email at office@causacreations.net. We'll discuss your specific needs, whether adaptations are required, or if the standard version suits your context. Talks will also cover the options of licensing or single purchase, including any additional development costs.

Implementation steps

Connect to the Same Wi-Fi
Ensure that all iPads intending to participate in the game are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This network does not require internet access.
Designate a Host
Choose one device to act as the host. On this device, select "Host Game" from the main menu. Typically, the host will then select "New Game" to initiate a new session. Optionally, the host then can assign a name to the game for easier identification if multiple sessions are running concurrently on the same Wi-Fi network.
Select Factions
On the host device, navigate to the faction selection screen. Choose your desired faction and tap "Ready to start" when prepared to proceed.
Joining the Game
Other devices wishing to participate should select "Enter Game" from the main menu. They should then see the game created by the host listed with its designated name. If the game does not appear, ensure that all devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Selecting Factions
Once connected to the hosted session, participants on other devices will also choose their factions and tap "Ready" when prepared.
Starting the Game
Once all factions are ready, the game will commence automatically.
Play the Game
Follow the tutorials in the first round, and play the game.
