Reflective Learning

Identifying gaps and catching them up

Reflective Learning is an online tool that empowers teachers to support students in closing learning gaps in Maths and English. We provide personalised learning pathways based on diagnostic assessments and track progress toward mastery, starting at their last place of secure knowledge. Our unique approach builds the metacognition of students so they can become independent lifelong learners.

To provide a solution for learning gaps in gatekeeping subjects (Maths, English and Science) that can be used easily in any country throughout the world, with proven impact. For students, we want their potential to be unlocked. For teachers, to give them a tool to do what they are unable to do at scale. For education systems, we want to empower them with insights that can change practice.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

With Covid-19 learning loss impacting every country, schools are searching for ways to help students catch up their gaps. But even before this, students have fallen years behind with no scalable remedial systems in place to address their learning needs. Our goal is to ensure that every student has the necessary foundations in place for future learning so that they can go onto excel STEM fields.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our web-based app is specifically designed to assist learners that have fallen behind. We first diagnose learning gaps on key foundational concepts that are required for more advanced knowledge. Having pinpointed which concepts they struggle with and how far to go back, students are then provided individualised lessons that target their gaps, along pedagogically-sound learning pathways.

The lessons are highly-interactive, data-light, and gamified through a digital currency and shop. Students are re-assessed after completing their catch-up lessons to track their improvement and where gaps still exist. Based on their level of mastery, students are either cycled back to their necessary learning or progress onto a new learning journey.

We support schools from initiation to impact. Several case studies demonstrate high levels of impact. In one such high school, failure rates dropped by 5-times and marks of 60% or above increased 5-fold from previous years.

How has it been spreading?

Reflective Learning has achieved several significant milestones in the past year alone. The company has more than doubled its user base from 30,000 to over 75,000, meeting its annual growth target of 100%. In addition, it has achieved profitability within three years of receiving seed funding and has doubled the size of its team. An external evaluator has also confirmed the company's world-class impact, reporting that learners are nearly 5 times more likely to pass mathematics and exactly 5 times more likely to pass with a grade above 60%. Finally, Reflective Learning has begun its international expansion, securing clients in first-world countries such as the UK, US, and Australia, a rare achievement for African companies.

Impact & scalability

HundrED Academy Reviews

By providing a self-study tool in terms of math, English and science, this innovation offers students a powerful self-assessment of concept, gap-filling, and in-depth understanding learning tool.

It is easily scalable since most schools have the same concerns, students falling behind, identifying gaps through diagnostics, then assigning personalized lessons. It is available online and can be used by anyone with an internet connection/device.

Implementation steps

Step 1: School leadership engagement
We help school leadership to understand how our tool fits into their context to support their strategy. We provide a full demonstration and understanding of how to implement the programme.
Step 2: Teacher onboarding
We train teachers on both our student app and teacher data dashboards. Schools decide which classes, grades or groups of students are included in the programme. Based on student details shared with us, we develop accounts and ensure everything is ready for the initial diagnostics. We guide the implementation strategy to ensure the pieces are in place for success.
Step 3: Baseline diagnostics
Teachers run the diagnostic assessments with students, with results being compiled automatically in our dashboards. We run a data analysis session with schools to fully understand the results and demonstrate the need for catch-up sessions.
Step 4: Run catch-up sessions
Students are automatically guided to their tailored catch-up lessons. Teachers are facilitators of the process, holding the relationship with students while the programme addresses their learning needs. We conduct regular check-ins with schools to guide implementation and answer any questions along the way.
