Purpose Discovery workbook for Children

Harnessing the potential of our next generation

Millions of children, especially in underserved communities, grow up with self-doubt and a lack of direction. They believe success is only for others, leading to low ambition, school dropouts, and wasted potential. The Purpose Discovery Workbook is a simple yet powerful tool designed to help children unlock their strengths, set clear goals, and develop confidence in their future.

I hope to empower young individuals to discover their unique purpose in life. By guiding them on a journey of self-reflection, clarity, and direction, I want to cultivate a generation that is purposeful, confident, and aligned with their passions and talents. This, in turn, can lead to more meaningful contributions to society and a more fulfilling and purpose driven life.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

A young girl once asked, “What makes me special?” and no one had an answer. That moment birthed the Purpose Discovery Workbook by MMA Foundation, the world’s first purpose-based NGO. It was created so every child, regardless of background, could discover their worth, purpose, and power to impact.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, the Purpose Discovery Workbook for Children is a colorful, interactive guide filled with engaging activities, reflective prompts, and creative exercises tailored to young minds. It helps children identify their strengths, passions, values, and dreams in a fun, relatable way. Through storytelling, drawing, simple goal-setting, and character-building tasks, the workbook encourages self-expression and self-awareness. Teachers, parents, caregivers, or mentors can guide children through it individually or in groups, making it perfect for classrooms, community centers, or outreach programs. The workbook not only sparks purpose but also builds confidence, emotional intelligence, and a growth mindset laying the foundation for a purpose-driven life.

How has it been spreading?

So far, the Purpose Discovery Workbook for Children has been spreading across Nigeria through MMA Foundation’s school outreaches and l support from the Ministry of Education. During our outreach programs, we engage directly with pupils in both public and low-income schools, introducing the workbook through interactive sessions and purpose clubs. With the Ministry’s backing, we’ve begun integrating the workbook into select school programs. The positive feedback from teachers, students, and parents has fueled growing demand, and we’re steadily expanding our reach across more states and communities nationwide.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

1. Understand the Workbook’s Goals
Before using the workbook, it’s important for leaders at home and in school; teachers and parents to understand its purpose. The workbook helps children explore their values, strengths, passions, and vision for the future, guiding them towards discovering their life’s purpose. Review the workbook and its sections to familiarize yourself with its exercises and objectives.
2. Set the Context and Purpose
Start by explaining the concept of “purpose” to the children. Discuss how discovering one’s purpose can help them make better choices, set meaningful goals, and lead a more fulfilling life. - Emphasize that this workbook is a tool for self-discovery and personal growth, not a test or assessment. It’s about their unique journey.
3. Create a Safe, Open Environment
Establish a safe space where children feel comfortable expressing themselves without judgment. Encourage open dialogue and make sure the children understand that there are no right or wrong answers, this is about self-reflection and exploration.
4. Introduce the Workbook Gradually
Rather than rushing through the workbook, introduce it in manageable sections. You can do this over several sessions, each focusing on a specific theme or exercise. Example: Focus on one chapter at a time, such as “Identifying Strengths” or “Exploring Passions,” ensuring that each child takes the time to reflect and process their thoughts.
5. Facilitate Reflection and Discussion
After each section or activity, lead a discussion. Allow children to share insights, ask questions, or express challenges they may have encountered. Encourage group reflection or one-on-one conversations to reinforce the idea that discovering their purpose is a journey, and it’s okay to explore different ideas.
6. Guide with Questions and Prompts
Help children process the workbook by guiding them with questions such as: What does this exercise teach you about yourself? Which strengths do you feel most connected to? How do your passions align with your future goals? Provide examples or share your own insights to make the process relatable.
7. Set Personal Goals
Once the workbook activities start to reveal insights, guide children to set small, achievable goals based on their reflections. For instance, if a child identifies a passion for art, they could set a goal to explore art classes or create a new art project.
8. Provide Ongoing Support
Implement regular check-ins to monitor progress. Revisit the workbook after a few months to see how their thoughts have evolved. Offer continued support and encouragement to help children stay motivated in their self-discovery process.
9. Celebrate Progress and Achievements
Celebrate each child’s growth and milestones in their journey of purpose discovery. Recognize efforts and achievements, no matter how small, to build confidence and reinforce the value of personal growth.
10. Encourage Lifelong Use
Remind children that discovering their purpose is an ongoing journey and they can continue using the workbook as a reference tool as they grow. Encourage them to revisit the workbook during different phases of life to reflect on how their purpose has evolved.
