Our program is designed to teach children the skills they need to be self-reliant, and confident, and supports out-of-school learning. Torba Junior helps build financial literacy, introduces children to the world of business in a supportive community atmosphere, and develops the entrepreneurial spirit at a young age.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

As a main pillar of our social responsibility, Torba Market Junior was created to teach children about running a small business, with sustainability ethos in mind. Driven by a combination of market demand, entrepreneurial opportunity, and educational goals, its establishment reflects a vision to provide a curated and safe platform for younger entrepreneurs.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Eight market tables designed especially for children to sell a variety of items. This can include, produce, baked goods, lemonade, dinosaurs packs with added fun facts, crochets, paintings and farm eggs from their grandparents farms. Parents and friends are present, but encouraged to stand aside to give children the confidence to run their small business independently and support when needed.

How has it been spreading?

The initiative is a one-of-a-kind in Qatar, and quickly grew in popularity. In its second year stall numbers doubled. Stalls are booked out weekly.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

We have a child friendly online application form. We encourage children to fill their own forms out with help from a parent. This application is on www. torba.qa

Implementation steps

Torba Market Junior
1) Apply to be a Torba Junior market stall holder
2) With the help of a parent, choose a slot. Read the rules & regulations about selling items (needs to be produced by kids) and our eco guidelines.
3) Some children declare that their profits will be donated to charities, we ask for that to be written on a poster and displayed.
4) They come to their preferred time slot at Torba Market in Doha an hour in advance and setup the junior booth and start selling.
5) Each session is a three hour slot.
