We strive to create classrooms filled with engaged learners who embrace STEM subjects. Our goal is to spark a love of learning, where learners are curious, excited about science, and eager to explore solutions to real-world challenges.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Our work in schools showed us how apathy and rote learning stifled learner potential, impacting South Africa's future in science and innovation. Learners wanted engaging experiences, not more textbooks. This sparked Mind Blown League - games that transform STEM into a fun, competitive experience. Leaderboards, tournaments, and real-world activities fuel excitement while integrating learning.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Mind Blown League transforms STEM learning through an immersive, multi-faceted experience:
1. Game-Based Clubs: Learners join school or community clubs centered around our original card and mobile games. Weekly sessions foster competition, collaboration, and learning, with leaderboards tracking progress.
2. Real-World Impact: We connect gaming to environmental action. Learners earn points through activities like waste audits and beach clean-ups, directly contributing to their communities.
3. Innovation Challenges: We host challenges (e.g., our nurdle-catching device competition) that empower learners to design solutions for real-world environmental problems.
4. Engagement Beyond the Game: Stories based on game characters and fan art competitions deepen engagement and spark creativity, ensuring learning extends beyond the core gameplay.

How has it been spreading?

Since August 2023, Mind Blown League has gained strong traction in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa currently reaching 50 schools. In 2024, we're poised for expansion by:

1. School Outreach: Inviting schools across South Africa to join, broadening our impact.
2. Community Partnerships: Collaborating with libraries and community organizations to establish Mind Blown League clubs within their after-school programs.

This multi-pronged growth strategy aims to bring our innovative approach to STEM education to a wider audience.
