About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The center was founded by Mrs. Cindy Brown, who recognised the urgent need for an ECD center in Westgate. Mrs. Brown bravely started the NPO with no external funding, and to this day, relies on the minimal parental fees and kind donations to make ends meet. The commitment of Lovechild goes beyond education: they ensure children are nourished by providing three meals a day because many children come from backgrounds that struggle to afford basic nutrition. The Growing Need: Why We Must Expand
Lovechild is a recognized quality ECD provider, but the community faces a severe systemic issue: a scarcity of centers capable of serving children with special needs.
The Urgent Driver for Expansion:
Every year, Mrs. Brown and the staff are approached by parents begging for the enrollment of their children—particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other special needs. It is incredibly difficult for these families to find a suitable, specialized school.
While Lovechild currently assists a small number of these children informally, the current facility is not geared up and the staff lack the proper specialized training to accommodate the growing demand safely and effectively. This forces children to remain at home, deprived of essential stimulation and education.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Lovechild Educare is a Registered NPO and registered with the Department of Education.
• Current Enrollment: Serving 80 children aged six months to seven years old.
• Community Integration: Maintains strong working relationships with local government schools, ensuring a smooth transition for children graduating from the center.
- Due to resource challenges we currently lack the facilities and the technical staff to expand.
- Over the past fourteen years we taught just over one hundred children with autism and every year the demand is growing with children coming in from far out neighbourhoods

How has it been spreading?

Mostly through word of mouth. Parents of children with autism speaking amongst themselves. The department of Social development's social workers also have been spreading awareness amongst parents.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

the best way for for trying to be an ECD that offers autism teaching and awareness, you firstly must have a passion for children. then you need to be patient with the children results take time. As an ECD practitioner you then Must have a facility that is geared towards the teaching of children with autism. the facility must have all the required facilities and educational aides. The teaching staff must have the technical Training of how to teach a child with autism.
