Learning spaces in specific color coordinated learning zones in class rooms

Quiet Zone, Group Zone, Presentation Zone and Feedback Zone

Most children in schools have their own chair and table pointing towards their teachers. Our color coordinated learning zones allows more than 90% of the children to find their own favourite spot to work. There are more than seven different ways of working in the four learning zones. We use nudging and colours because the children then make better decisions on their own.

Our learning zones is an alternative to the standard classroom setup that we all know. We hope it will spread to more schools. We know from research that self-determination is a driver for better well being. We wish to set the classroom free for the benefit of the children.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Our goal has been from the start to create Learning Spaces that involve children in their learning proces. Our learning spaces are more flexible and they include different ways of working. The teachers choose in collaboration with each child how they work. We use the floor, steps, tables and high tables. Because of the nudging built in the learning spaces work for all children and teachers .

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We clear the class rooms of most tables and chairs and create spots in the rooms with color coordinated furniture in different height that indicates to the children how they must act in each of the four learning zones. Blue means "Quiet", mustard means "Group", green means "Presentation" where all students are present and engaged all facing one way and red means "Feedback" and "help". students no longer sit at their own desk for most of the day. We call it "Movement without a high Pulse" and we consider each of the children´s next work position as the best. Up to 10% of the children need their own work space and they are given that in specific areas.

How has it been spreading?

Our learning spaces have been spreading mostly via word of mouth, posts on LinkedIn, information on our website and exhibitions like Bett at the ExCel in London in 2020. We are working with a few Norwegian schools. We have gone from single class rooms as prototypes in twenty different Danish schools to two whole schools in 2023. The transition is easy even though the children go from their own table and chair to using the whole classroom for working. The feedback from teachers are extremely good. 90% of them thinks that Learning Zones is better for the children than traditional classrooms with tables and chairs. 95% of the teachers thinks that learning zones improves their work environment.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

We normally start in a new school with a "try out" in one classroom with a certain team of teachers and a group of children. If the "try out" is a succes (100% has been in the past three years) we do more classrooms. We collect questionnaires from both children and teachers. Implementation steps

Arrange a meeting
First step is to meet up with us to find out if learning zones is right for your school. You have to believe in the concept.
Meet up with the teachers
The teachers will also have to believe in the learning zones concept.
Test learning zones
A group of children and a team of teachers are chosen to do a test of learning zones in f.ex. a school. If it is a succes we have ambassadors of learning zones in the school.
More teams join the concept
Now it is time to spread learning zones in alle corners of the school. It will allow teachers to learn from each other.
Implementing the feedback zone
The Feedback Zone is harder that the other learning zones to implement. There are decisions to make on how systematic feedback is done in each school. That is why special attention is needed on the Feedback Zone.
