Kids Media Lab: Technologies and Learning Programming at Preschool Age

Kids Media Lab

Portugal
The innovation of this project is the introduction of programming in a playful and creative way in kindergarten activities. It is important to know and explore programming languages that design new ways of playing and that develop imagination, creativity, reflection and thinking, essential skills to develop at preschool age, in search of a harmonious development of the child (www.kidsmedialab.pt)
Introduction

Kids Media Lab - Technologies and learning programming in preschool age

What we do?

The Kids Media Lab Project is based on a postdoctoral research whose main research question is to understand: How do children learn to program at preschool age?

In this way, we promote programming and robotics learning in formal and informal learning environments.

Why we do it?

We do not want to create programmers, but to prepare children for their future lives, given that technologies are playing an increasingly important role.

Learning by playing and knowing by investigating are our ways of working.

Tips for implementation
We conducted workshops on educational robotics for preschool children and in ScratchJr, focusing on educators, families and children. The whole process starts with a drawing made by the kids and then these powerful ideas are worked out with robots or in ScratchJr (www.kidsmedialab.pt)
