Why did you create this innovation?
Inspire Citizens systemically enacts the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.7 by creating systemic approaches to educate for sustainability and social justice to help students and their communities move forward as a harmonious society. Inspire Citizens supports schools to create clear missions, visions, and implementation approaches, while providing supportive professional development.
How does your innovation work in practice?
As long time educators at international schools around the world, we realized that although many schools have missions that are concerned with creating global citizens, education for sustainability, and future-focused education, rarely do these schools have clear missions, visions, and approaches, models of implementation, or the affordable and accessible best practice supportive professional development needed. Currently we use our Global Impact Schools Self Study and our Empathy to Impact approach to set up school implementation programs personalized to the needs and context of the school and use the empathy to impact approach to drive curriculum design, student programs, and our evidence collection and action research. Currently, we have thousands of teachers and tens of thousands of students around the world who are engaging in learning experiences based on the Empathy to Impact approach and are taking action in their local communities.
How has it been spreading?
Because the Empathy to Impact Approach can be applied in any age group, content, curricular or extra-curricular program, and is simple and effective to integrate into curriculum, teachers around the world have begun to see how adding a WHY and a WHAT NOW to teaching and learning can help to create impact projects to act on local and global issues. It is used to collect evidence and justify HOW teachers are creating global citizens through focused teaching and learning. Inspire Citizens’ approaches have been spreading through keynotes and workshops at international education conferences, evidence sharing and proof of concept, social media, our collaborative efforts to create professional learning networks, and testimonial, referrals, and word of mouth.
