We created the curriculum to empower students to stand up for themselves and their peers; decrease online drama, which improves campus culture and decreases discipline issues; provide leadership roles for students by utilizing peer-to-peer help; create a common vocabulary to make it easier to address issues as a school; and open up dialogues about tough situations.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Cyberbullying, harassment, and online abuse are linked to higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide among youth. Cyberattacks can also be part of cyberbullying, endangering children’s and teens’ privacy and safety. As digital technology becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, the risk of online abuse grows all the more acute.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The curriculum, which meets ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Digital Citizenship Guidelines, provides scripted lessons for anyone on a school campus responsible for training students and staff about cybersecurity and cyberbullying. It provides participants with the tools to proactively handle tough situations (online and in-person) and prevent students and staff from becoming victims.

There are 50 lessons designed to be taught in order, providing at least one lesson per week. Alternatively, lessons can be taught as standalones arranged by topic.

Each lesson consists of:
• An Introduction
• A Lesson Objective
• An #ICANHELP Activity
• #IWILLHELP Discussion Questions
• An #IDIDHELP Positive Follow-Up Challenge

Lessons are delivered using a variety of methods. In addition to teacher-led activities, lessons utilize:
• Peer-to-peer models
• Self-guided, student-led lessons
• Technology integration
• Simple implementation with minimal prep

How has it been spreading?

In addition to being promoted via our website, newsletters, and social media, our innovation has spread to thousands of schools by word-of-mouth and testimonials from its users. We regularly hold presentations (both virtual and in-person) for schools and conferences, where educators will learn about our curriculum and purchase it for use in their own schools. Students have applied the lessons they learn from the curriculum to take down toxic social media pages and/or form #ICANHELP clubs at their schools, amplifying our impact year-round.

Our goal is to sell 150 curriculum packages per year during the next two years.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

Empowerment and Digital Wellness educates and encourages students to use social media in a positive way. Highly practical within the school context and developing a culture of togetherness and not of division. Over 400000 students in two countries have used the innovation demonstrating some degree of scalability so far.

HundrED Academy Reviews

Very holistic and well-structured program (as far as I can see from the outside). Not only for educating the students but also the teachers training and parental education, this approach is much needed globally. We would love to have this innovation in package in many languages.

The reach of the project in the last 6 years has clearly been huge as has the impact with those that the group have worked with. Supporting pupils to reflect and consider the way that they can help develop positivity within others is a wonderful concept.
