About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Our study revealed that most children of school-going age living in slums, were deprived of education- formal, informal or non-formal. These children, mostly occupied as beggars, rag-pickers, gamblers and shoe- polishers, worked to supplement their family income. They were also involved in petty crimes and drug peddling and therefore, dispossessed of the basic joys and value-based education.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

“From Roots To Fruits,” is our way. We handhold our marginalized Beneficiaries at age 3, until they are 18 or a little older, when they are standing on their feet , as responsible and forwardly mobile and dignified human beings. Yes, we have ample evidence that it works. And yes, we do use technology, proper proprietary curriculum and engaging methods of learning. We do this by way of four verticals:

I. VATIKAS : Our development Centres in the slums, where children acquire basic literacy based on the holistic 4H Formula: HEAD, HEART, HANDS & HEALTH.

II. SCHOLARSHIPS: Deserving students are sponsored on Scholarship to formal Schools, which brings them in mainstream formal education.

III.VOCATIONAL TRAINING: Mainly women from impoverished homes, learn skills that give them the ability to support themselves and their families, financially.

IV.CAREERS AND LIVELIHOOD : Higher education & skill based learning, that empowers our people to be financially strong.

How has it been spreading?

From being merely an idea, prior to its inception September 2001, Gyanoday currently operates 21 Centres in 3 states of India and has supported over 1.2 million people towards leading a better life. Its work is aligned with UNSDG#: 1,3,4,5 & 8. Some of its main achievements are that: 0.8 million children have gained Basic Literacy, 0.5 million have been through Formal Schooling, 0.2 million have gained Employment, 0.18 million Women have been Empowered towards self reliance; over the next 2-3 years, Gyanoday centres are expected to rise to 30 and total beneficiaries to 1.8 million.
