Gleding United - Childhood for life

Childhood for life - unite, engage and change Let every child find their superpower.

Gleding started as a word opposite of bullying. Instead of focusing on what we do not want - Gleding gives a mindset, tools, books and digital content to build a strong community from the beginning of life. We are especially passionate about bringing parents, professionals, caretakers and children together around a shared platform to develop empathy, shared focused and human skills.

Days that build healthy and quality of life. From control to trust. We can give our children education that make them see their strengths, give them joy, meaning, playfulness and curiosity about the world. We want every child to feel loved and to discover their own super powers. We also want to children to contribute to their local communities through the Gleding-patrols.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Bullying is a growing problem. The Anti-Bullying programs have been too focused on fixing problems instead of building a culture of compassion and empathy. We know that empathy and compassion comes from feeling safe and loved, plus adults who respond to children's emotional needs. We need to involve the "team" around the children to create a better future.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We have platforms with content to build social and emotional skills. these digital solutions are available for kindergartens and primary schools - they involve parents, professionals and children towards resilience, awareness and knowledge about the universal human needs and quality of life. We inspire educators to create pro-social activities with the children. We have many stories of impact - from families having more quality time together - to neighbourhoods and communities were people have found belonging and happiness with the focus on Gleding. Children create Gleding patrols and show how little it takes to make a big difference. We also create and use physical tools like prints, books, calendars etc, courses and workshops for parents and professionals. This year we are adding a training for 13-19 year olds - youth ambassadors that will be mentors for the younger children.

How has it been spreading?

The feedback we get on the impact our stories have in homes, schools and nurseries are our main achievement. The empowering of children, the stories about forgiveness, friendships and pro-social behaviour is working. We have reached about 1000 schools and kindergardens, spoken for more than 200 000 children, parents and educators. Sold more than 60 000 books. We are expanding to the english speaking world and we would like to translate our tools and content to many other languages. This summer our first book Gleding was shown in a conference for The World federation of the deaf in South Korea. Now the rest of the books are being translated to sign-language and english. Spring 2024 our pro-social game "Go Gleding" is ready with a pilot.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

A good place to start is by reading the books - for the full experience go to gleding.com and sign up for our newsletter + contact the Gleding team: kristin@gleding.com or the founder and empathy trainer Siri Abrahamsen: siri@gleding.com for access to the digital platforms.

Impact & scalability

HundrED Academy Reviews

The program can have an enormous impact at schools, in the family, in the neighbourhood, and community- for the healthy development of children throughout the program area. The project addresses the overlooked aspect of developmental psychology.

The innovation is scalable by bringing parents, professionals, caretakers and children around a shared platform containing socio-emotional learning tools to develop empathy and human skills. The materials can be translated in different languages.

Invite the whole community to a strength based approach on community development
Use the school or kindergarten to invite the whole community - sports, culture, grandparents, local politicians, neighbours for an event about belonging, tolerance and empathy. Let people get to meet and collaborate on how to build the everyday life that will make them all flourish. Find the hidden assets of the community, discover strenghts and opportunities and commit to small achievable goals for the coming year.
