Girls are underrepresented in STEM due to societal stereotypes and a lack of early encouragement. Only 19% of Europe’s tech workforce being women and there is a growing demand for skilled professionals in STEM fields. Girls Go Circular aims to bridge this gap by equipping girls aged 14–19 with essential digital, entrepreneurial, and sustainability skills and empowering them to explore real-world STEM challenges.
Girls Go Circular provides a free online platform available in 25 languages, offering interactive courses on diverse topics—from Circular Fashion to AI. Developed in collaboration with educators and experts, the courses emphasize deep tech and the circular economy, and align with key European frameworks: DigComp, EntreComp, and GreenComp. Each course features hands-on, collaborative challenges that build digital, entrepreneurial, and sustainability skills. To promote gender equality in STEM, the content features female role models in tech leadership and increases the visibility of women in science and technology. While Girls Go Circular programme targets girls, the courses however are open and can be completed by anyone.
The platform also provides teacher materials with guidance for integration into school lessons.
We collect feedback from students on the platform after they complete the course. Based on survey responses from 24,115 learners, 80% reported increased interest in STEM and circular economy fields after completing the course, 82% reported that the courses helped them develop digital and entrepreneurial skills, 84% felt more confident in using the skills and knowledge acquired in a real-world situation, and nearly 90% said they are likely to complete another course of Girls Go Circular programme.
The impact extends beyond the platform through a yearly student challenge, our flagship event - Women and Girls in STEM Forum, and a student ambassador programme.
Since its launch, Girls Go Circular has grown significantly, expanding from 1781 registered learners in 2020 to over 60,000 youth trained in 2024. The platform now offers 18 courses and has increased its reach by offering content in 25 languages, up from 6. Girls Go Circular is currently used in 1,000 schools across Europe, with 86% of learners being girls.
Looking ahead, we aim to expand into new countries, particularly Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kosovo. We also plan to provide more support for teachers by developing more detailed guidelines and adding teacher courses. We aim to strengthen the ambassador programme and add new courses to keep up with evolving needs in STEM education.
