Innovation Overview
Why did you create this innovation?
I am a designer and the mother of a 5-year-old boy. I believe in education as a basis for the development of soft skills - resolution problems, divergent and connected thinking, empathy, creativity. The pandemic allows us to reinvent current models. I started to map my child's learning processes and saw the power of that a tool to support the relationship between school, children, and parents.
How does your innovation work in practice?
The map is a visual tool that expands knowledge starting from the information gathering and the connection between them. It is built with the productions of the child along with the records of speeches and other expressions, noticed the adults around (teachers and parents). With the careful observation and listening of the child´s language, the map elements are organized to establish relations of similarity, opposition, continuity of themes. Who assembles the map is who curates subjects and creates categories to highlight the learning process. In a visual perspective, the map helps the child to increase the awareness of learning by doing, to relaunch and deepen their investigations. For adults, the map makes abstractions palpable and provides the relationship between the school curriculum and the possibilities of learning in the phenomena every day, not restricted to the school building. It is possible to learn anywhere. The mind map makes this visible.
How has it been spreading?
By using a design methodology, I was able to prototype visual maps of daily learning, applied as support in constructivist school education. The tool was a success in supporting the dialogue with the teachers and generated interest from other audiences. So far, we have trained 26 public school teachers in São Paulo and have given consulting for 9 managers of private schools in 2 states and 4 cities in Brazil. The tool has also been applied in individual sessions of consulting do parents, teachers, and managers in Campinas. In partnership with the childhood education teacher Rafaela Bley, a course about pedagogical orientation was applied for 20 teachers and managers of public and private schools. Soon, we will produce a free e-book based on our experience.
If I want to try it, what should I do?
People can contact me to know more about the map construction or follow my posts and lives on social media, where I usually share knowledge and experiences. Until December, the goal is to write the free e-book and make it available with the map construction methodology and case studies to exemplify the application.
