Esoma Kids

Where learning feels like playtime

Esoma Kids is an engaging EdTech platform designed to improve foundational literacy and numeracy for children aged 4-11 in Sub-Saharan Africa - where 89% of children cannot read and understand by age 10. The platform incorporates gamified learning and personalized adaptive learning paths, tailoring content to individual needs and ensuring steady progress to proficiency.

I hope to see more than just the 11% of children in Sub-Saharan Africa who can read for meaning and solve basic math problems by the age of 10. The goal is to build a literate society that can be entrusted with running not just the continental, but also the global economy in the future. It all begins with the proficiency in foundational literacy and numeracy.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

I grew and schooled in rural Kenya, where the only chance I had at making it in life was through education. Throughout my nine years of primary education, my parents never afforded a textbook once. Post my university, I was nominated into the board of management of my former primary school. At one point, the school head narrated to us how she had a class that could not answer exam questions because they could not read the questions effectively.

It took me back to the years when I schooled, and I felt the kids could not read because of the same problems I experienced, where parents could not afford learning materials every year. This is when the idea of Esoma was born, to give children an opportunity to access learning more affordably, and even give a better twist with personalized learning. This way, we could not have eighth graders who cannot answer exam questions because they could not read for meaning. I felt that taking this adaptive learning to their parents phones or gadgets donated by government and well-wishers to their schools gives them a better chance at academic success.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The learning journey begins with diagnostic tests that assess each child's current abilities. Based on the results, the platform creates personalized adaptive learning paths, tailoring content to individual needs and ensuring steady progress. Key competencies are presented as manageable, measurable milestones, and learners must demonstrate mastery of each before advancing. This approach encourages deep understanding and retention.
Esoma Kids also provides instant feedback, progress tracking for parents and teachers, and offline capabilities to reach areas with limited connectivity, ensuring every child has a chance to achieve their learning potential.

How has it been spreading?

Esoma Kids has been built with Sub-Saharan Africa in mind. We began by launching in Kenya, where we have managed to reach over 23,000 children through our platform. We have also developed a school/teacher learning portal that is now allowing us to integrate with schools and provide them with a platform for supplemental learning. Teachers are using Esoma Kids as a teaching and homework tool with their kids.

Our exploration of the African market is has begun in earnest, signing a distribution deal with a South African company that has business interests in South Africa and Zimbabwe. We hope to have started yielding business results from this agreement by Q4 of 2025. Further, we are on a charm offensive to improve reach, and increase our conversion to real use by learners in Kenya and the continent.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Initially meant for just parents and learners in a B2C model, we have made an adjustment to also target institutions. By adding the teacher/school leaning portal on out platform, we have added a powerful dynamic of system usability by important stakeholders in the education landscape. We had always wanted to have a hand in the school system, and that has been made possible by this new feature that allows teachers to use the system as an aid in class and as well as an assignment platform.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try out Esoma Kids, access it through the following details.

When signed in, select any child with an active license and go through their experience in the system. You should be able to have a feel of how the interface works, and how out competency attainment process (CAP) embedded in every concept gives a child all the possible chances to master a concept.

Implementation steps

Create a Parent/School Account
The parent or school signs up to Esoma Kids, in simple process needing their name, phone number, and a password that they create. The school registers interest by contacting our team.
Add Child
After setting up the parent account, the parent/guardian has the option to add up to ten kids in their account. For schools, we onboard them by setting up a sub domain account with their parents, teachers, and learners details.
Start Learning
When now the children have been onboarded, each can start learning by accessing the learner's interface by selecting the child from the parent's dashboard. Children attached to schools also access their interfaces from their parents' dashboards.
Learning Progress Monitoring
The parent and the teacher can access the learner's progress through their own dashboards, ensuring that they can help the child in areas they spot consistent struggles. The teacher can assign learning areas to the child, which then are notified to the parent.
Adapting and Personalizing Learning
Through the learner's learning data, the system curates a personalized learning path that can be adapted based on the strengths and weaknesses the learner shows along the way.
