Empathy to Impact Design Framework

Design curriculum, projects, and strategies for changemakers

The Empathy to Impact Design Framework is a simple, comprehensive tool for changemakers. It helps design leadership projects tied to real-world issues, curriculum and units with clear purpose, whole-school strategies, and experiential learning rooted in strong, reciprocal community partnerships.

Target group
We hope to see an education that is human-centered, actionable, and connected to the real world. Students develop confidence, creativity, and leadership skills, while educators design learning that matters and schools become spaces where impactful projects, meaningful relationships, and community engagement are the norm. Ultimately, we want education to equip every learner with the skills, mindset, and agency to create positive change in their world.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

There are many complicated approaches out there. We wanted to simplify them, make a framework adaptable to any context, and provide all the tools changemakers need to move from understanding to impact. (at school, at work, in life!)

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our framework can take many forms. It could be an integrated unit per grade that connects to real-world issues and leads to action, a trip designed for deep impact, or a well-organized leadership project. See examples here: https://inspirecitizens.org/vignettes

How has it been spreading?

A lot! We work directly with schools and have partnered with over 220 schools, reaching 300k+ students and 45k+ educators. Many more access the framework for free on our website. And we are very excited to announce the soon publication of our book sharing the full methodology with an even wider audience.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

We constantly adapt the framework to fit different contexts. For example, with teachers we start with ABLE to identify what they need to teach, then focus on CARE to define the “why.” We also host monthly conversations to gather insights from educators and refine our approach.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

It’s all free on our website: https://inspirecitizens.org/e2i25. You’ll find every step, tools, and stories to guide you through the framework.

Implementation steps

ABLE
Q: Which knowledge, skills, and understandings will I develop in this unit/project design?
You will begin by identifying the key knowledge, skills, and understandings students need to explore the world and take meaningful action. This foundation ensures learners engage critically, creatively, and compassionately. ABLE aligns with your school’s curriculum and standards, setting the stage for deeper inquiry, purpose-driven learning, and impactful action in later stages.
CARE
Q: What do I care about and why?
This is where you ignite student interest and curiosity, prompting them to make a connection within themselves, with their community (near or far) or with nature. This supports student agency as students action their purpose, their “WHY?” (Talent + What the World Needs = Your Vocation)
IMPACT
Q: How am I taking meaningful and sustainable action to address the issue that I care about?
The IMPACT phase of our framework focuses on real-world application, moving from outputs to meaningful outcomes and lasting shifts in communities. Students evaluate their efforts and reflect on how their actions contribute to long-term well-being, justice, and sustainability, laying the foundation for effective community engagement.
AWARE
Q: How will I authentically investigate and become more deeply aware of the issues that I care about?
The AWARE phase helps students explore a real problem, its impact, and root causes. Using observation, interviews, active listening, and system analysis, they work with community partners or experts to understand the issue deeply while building skills and preparing for sustainable action.
REFLECT
Q: How will we reflect and what will we reflect on?
The REFLECT phase guides students to connect knowledge, values, and emotions to real-world challenges. Through self-assessment, peer dialogue, and community feedback, they build self-awareness, empathy, and critical thinking, ensuring projects are iterative, responsive, and sustainable. Reflection should happen along each step of the Empathy to Impact process, not just at the end.
