Why did you create this innovation?

Over 15 years ago, a team of researchers at the University of Turku, Finland, observed many failed attempts at applying digital tools to education. Often, the tools entertained students but lacked deeper pedagogical meaning or outcomes. A key finding was that available digital tools didn't help teachers with their core tasks of giving feedback and marking tests. So, the team created a solution.

How does your innovation work in practice?

In practice, students use Eduten as a supplement to teacher-led math lessons. Think: engaging and meaningful online textbook. Better still, it’s adapted to each individual student and doesn’t require hours of marking or assessment by teachers.

Students access the online platform via computers or tablets, log in to their personal accounts and complete exercises that are related to the day’s classroom work. They collect trophies along the way to celebrate their success. They also practice growth mindset learning because they have the chance to correct mistakes easily and without fear or shame.

The technology has been developed in collaboration with the University of Turku. Therefore, students, teachers and school communities can be assured of its rigour and deep scientific testing. 100s of peer-reviewed papers have been published about Eduten (known as ViLLE in Finland).

Eduten’s exercise library, based on Finnish pedagogy, has been co-designed with thousands of Finnish teachers.

How has it been spreading?

Initially, Eduten was designed for and by Finnish teachers and students.

After launching the platform under the name ViLLe in Finland, it was a roaring success. Finnish teachers and students loved it and found it to be an excellent supplement to their daily math lessons. Over 500 000 students couldn’t be wrong!

To date, the team has published more than 100 scientific papers, and over time they also garnered the interest of the international pedagogical science community.

Therefore, the next logical step was to launch the platform globally. This time, under the name of Eduten. Since the global launch, the platform is now in over 65 countries worldwide and counting.

Most recently, Eduten (under its Finnish name ViLLE) was awarded the UNESCO Prize for the use of ICT in Education.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Eduten is easy to learn and use and comes with all of the necessary training. The exercises are compatible with any curriculum. Currently, Eduten is available in English, Spanish, Swedish, Estonian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Japanese, and Ukrainian.
