AlifLaila Kids Digital Library aims to reposition reading as a foundational element of learning rather than an optional activity. By offering culturally relevant stories in multiple languages, it enables children to build comprehension in the languages they speak—an essential yet often under-addressed need across education systems. It supports educators in embedding reading across subjects and equips parents with visibility into progress, strengthening the home-school learning loop. Ultimately, we aim to move reading from the margins of education to its foundation.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

In many homes across Pakistan, children’s access to books is limited to what schools provide or what families can afford. We have seen that most parents struggle either with the cost of books or with the simple fact that age-appropriate, engaging stories in Urdu, English and other local languages are hard to find. Millions of children are curious to read, yet have few outlets to explore beyond textbooks.

We created AlifLaila Kids Digital Library because children’s curiosity should never be limited by access. The platform brings 2,500+ interactive books to children’s fingertips, in languages they understand, with stories that boost creativity, and early literacy skills. It also actively engages families and schools through guided reading and progress tracking—turning reading into a shared, daily experience.

In doing so, AlifLaila enables children in even resource-constrained settings to not only read, but to explore, and grow with stories as a natural part of their lives.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

AlifLaila Kids Digital Library is a fully digital reading ecosystem accessible on mobile, tablet, laptop, and computer. Children explore 2,500+ beautifully designed books available across six languages—including English, Urdu, Arabic, Pashto, Punjabi, and Sindhi—with culturally relevant images and illustrations. The platform is designed to expand easily, allowing us to add new languages as needed.

The family reading module allows parents to actively guide their children’s reading journeys by assigning books, tracking progress, and celebrating milestones. Reading levels, badges, and leaderboards encourage consistent engagement, making reading a shared and rewarding experience at home.

The school module enables teachers to create virtual classrooms where students engage with stories aligned to lessons, assign books, monitor progress, and motivate students through achievements. This integration strengthens comprehension across subjects and fosters a culture of reading within the classroom.

Together, these features create a connected, interactive ecosystem where children build literacy, creativity, and a lifelong love for books, supported by both families and educators.

How has it been spreading?

AlifLaila Kids Digital Library has grown into a platform where reading is interactive and part of daily routines. Parents and teachers who see children engaged with stories share the platform with peers, becoming ambassadors in their communities. This word-of-mouth spread has helped the library reach over 20,000 active members and gain adoption in more than 50 schools.

Children motivated by reading levels, badges, and leaderboards invite friends and siblings to explore stories, creating a self-sustaining cycle of curiosity and habit-building. Online engagement also plays a key role, with tens of thousands exploring the platform each month, discovering books and resources that spark their interest.

Through this organic adoption, AlifLaila is embedding reading into homes and classrooms alike, cultivating a growing ecosystem of learners supported by families and educators.
