Academia Made Accessible

Alekhni helps young people discover the joy of academic reading and writing. Our gamified academic text editor lets students and teachers work together on assignments while supporting academic integrity. Through gamification, we encourage students to take ownership of their work and make research, reading, writing, and learning feel engaging and enjoyable.

We hope Alekhni can help make academic reading, research, and writing a natural part of students’ education before they reach university. We want young people to leave school feeling confident in their ability to find, evaluate, understand, and use sources independently, rather than relying mainly on textbooks or information provided to them. We also hope to shift how students experience academic work. Through gamification and student ownership, we want research, reading, and writing to become activities that students genuinely engage with and enjoy. Ultimately, we want students to enter university better prepared to learn independently, think critically, and take responsibility for their own academic work.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Alekhni was created because its founders experienced a gap between school and university firsthand. We realized that, when we left school, we were not fully prepared for the kind of reading and writing expected at university.
At school, we were rarely taught how to independently find and evaluate sources, or how to distinguish between information that is credible, reliable, and valid. We often relied on a single textbook for a subject rather than learning how to explore different sources, compare perspectives, and build our own understanding through research.
Alekhni grew out of the desire to help young people develop these foundations earlier. We want students to become comfortable with reading, researching, writing, and working with sources before they reach university, while also helping them enjoy the process and develop a sense of ownership over their academic work.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Alekhni is a gamified writing platform designed to help students learn and practise academic reading, research, and writing.
Schools, homeschool associations, and parents can request access through a subscription. Once students are onboarded, we help set up their classes and supervise their progress. Students then take part in a gamified writing experience where they research, read, develop ideas, and work on their writing.
Alongside the platform, students receive webinars and other open-access resources from Alekhni. We also provide teacher training and parent training programmes, helping adults understand how to act as effective scaffolds for students throughout their learning journey.
The aim is to create an environment where students can develop academic skills while taking ownership of their work and experiencing research, reading, and writing as enjoyable activities.

How has it been spreading?

Alekhni has primarily been spreading through word of mouth and dedicated outreach.
We connect directly with schools, homeschool associations, and other educational communities to introduce them to the platform and explore how it can support their students. Recommendations and conversations within educational networks have also helped us reach new schools, parents, and educators.
Our outreach focuses not only on introducing the platform, but also on explaining the larger idea behind Alekhni: helping young people develop the reading, research, and writing skills they need for university and beyond, while making the learning process engaging and enjoyable.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try Alekhni, schools, homeschool associations, or parents can request access to our gamified writing platform through a school subscription.
Once access is arranged, we will help set up the relevant classes and support the students as they begin their experience on the platform. Students can then take part in the gamified writing experience, while also accessing Alekhni’s webinars and other open-access resources.
Teachers and parents can also take part in our training programmes, which help them understand how to support and scaffold students as they develop their academic reading, research, and writing skills.
