Developing the public education system through the IB Programme.

Our innovative program utilizes the framework of the International Baccalaureate Programme to develop educational processes, provide training for educators and improve learning experiences in a public school setting, aiming to transform a content based curriculum into a more holistic, conceptual, balanced and student centered approach to education.

In the future we hope to take this innovation forward by applying the framework to a public school in each region in the country to provide widespread access to quality education where students demonstrate agency, deep conceptual understanding and meaningful reflections on their learning experience and overall well-being.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Public school education systems in Egypt tend to be stagnant and can be purely content focused, constricting both students and educators to limited learning experiences. We found that most students graduate from the system lacking necessary skills that prepare them for the world and allow them to navigate their life with autonomy and agency.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In collaboration with the ministry of education we selected one school to model this initiative. We compiled a group of experienced educators to train public school teachers to understand and use the framework, collaborate with them on reframing the curriculum and lead the programme implementation process. A master meeting schedule between both schools to facilitate the consultation and collaboration between teachers was created. Regular meetings, checkpoints, training workshops, and consultation visits were conducted to ensure the ongoing development of the programme.

How has it been spreading?

The school successfully became authorized in the PYP, MYP and DP programme, with two graduating classes from the DP programme. For 2 consecutive years, the dp students achieved remarkable results surpassing the world average. The DP first class has graduated with exceptional results, one of them scoring 45. Over the past 1-2 years we started another public school campus and completed the PYP authorization process and are working towards the MYP and DP authorization this year. The school recently also created a Student Council to empower and represent the student voice on campus, making decisions about their academic and extracurricular activities reflecting the development and realization of student wellbeing.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

By collaborating with the responsible parties, clarifying the vision, and agreeing on the methodology of its application. If it is a public school curriculum that you hope to develop, create the vision alongside the municipality or ministry of education, in collaboration with the IBO. Then create a volunteer base of educators to carry out the implementation of the framework in the school.

Creating & clarifying the vision with the relevant stakeholders
In our case, the school's mission is to apply the IB education in government schools in Egypt. A
protocol was signed between GEF, the MoE, & the IBO in 2014 to start
implementing the IB education with affordable fees, including serving visually
impaired students. This was to happen through GPIS sponsoring, managing and
supervising the implementation of the IB system.
Identifying the school community you aim to develop
Learn about the educators, curriculum, campus and students to identifying their needs and scope of the project. With regards to this initiative, a building was appointed under the name of the Egyptian International School (EIS Zayed). The school learned about the needs and limitations of the national public school curriculum and then began to oversee the application processes for onboarding both students and staff.
Create and educate the team of volunteer educators to support and coach the new school staff
Create a hierarchy to oversee the implementation of the project, identify the methodology of work and create the measuring criteria to evaluate its success. Train the team of educators that will work along side the school's teachers to support and coach the implementation of the framework.
