GiveInternet.org

It's all about the connection.

GiveInternet.org is a platform where you can sponsor monthly Internet fees and laptops for underprivileged high-school students living in refugee camps and underserved communities. Our educational partners on the ground provide them with skills training courses, and we provide them with laptops and Internet connectivity so that students can continue their education and work even after graduating!

Lack of access to knowledge causes low academic and professional outcomes, poor health, shorter lifespan, unemployment, and gender inequality. Since women and poor, rural communities are predominantly excluded from today’s online revolution, they are missing out on academic and professional opportunities. We hope that our innovation becomes a cost-effective means of accessing global knowledge.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Today, 1 billion students worldwide are offline because they cannot afford connectivity and devices. The lack of access to knowledge and information contributes to poor health, unemployment, and gender inequality. The digital divide reflects and widens socioeconomic gaps. We believe that in today's knowledge economy, Internet access is a human right.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our platform GiveInternet.org ensures that supporting connectivity through online recurring donations is simple and transparent. Registering as a donor takes a minimum of $1 and a few clicks. Donors receive monthly transparency reports with detailed costs, success stories and more. Each project, donor, partner, cost and the story of each student is documented on the website. Our educational partners on the ground help students receive essential skills for today’s economy. We provide the students with digital resources that are crucial for their development after the learning period is over. This effective system creates trust and affordability, hence people are more eager to donate and more students are being introduced to the digital world.

How has it been spreading?

As of today, our project has helped more than 2000 students. We are continuously measuring the impact the project has had on them. Initially starting with surveys and in-depth interviews to lay out the possible impact areas, we have been conducting longitudinal studies to measure changes one year at a time. According to our study, one year after students are brought online, their academic outcomes, Internet and self-education accessibility, computer literacy and mental well-being improve significantly.
Currently, we operate in Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Bangladesh and Georgia, with the goal of adding more countries and projects to our platform. Our next challenge is adding India and Middle Eastern countries in the next 2 years.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

If a nonprofit organization works with underprivileged students and helps them with skills development, they can contact us via email @team@giveinternet.org and we can discuss a possible partnership project.

Implementation steps

Students receive skills training courses.
Thanks to many incredible organizations that provide free education, underprivileged students have a chance to acquire digital skills (e.g. coding; graphic design). However, the real challenge starts when the training courses are over and the lack of digital resources such as Internet access and laptops hinders students from continuing with their work & studies.
Partners conduct the student selection process.
Partners recommend us students (who don’t have independent access to laptops and the Internet) who have finished training courses with success and who are determined to use digital resources for further accelerating their studies & careers.
Transferring the funds.
We transfer the funds so that the students can receive the digital resources.
Distributing the resources.
Our partners on the ground bring the resources to the students.
