1 Million Teachers

Empowered teachers change lives

As effective teaching usually comes down to teachers’ skills and motivation, the 1MT programs are designed to attract new young teachers to the profession – providing them with a solid foundation of basic subjects and pedagogical knowledge, ongoing professional development with effective mechanisms in place to mentor, support, and motivate them.

The single greatest effect on student achievement is not race, it is not poverty – it is the effectiveness of the teacher.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We know that teachers play a critical role in unlocking the potential of every child and lifting entire communities. Despite this, the shortage of motivated and trained teachers worldwide continues to grow. Without urgent action, more children won’t have access to a teacher by 2030, than there are today.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We provide life skills training along with foundational subjects like basic numeracy and literacy and pedagogical knowledge. These are supported with ongoing professional development with effective mechanisms in place to mentor, support, and motivate the teachers. Our program goes beyond training to providing the teachers with pathways to lucrative professional teaching careers and job satisfaction. Learning is also supported with agile communities of practice that incorporates both low tech like WhatsApp on feature phones, Zoom and similar interaction methods, and physical meetups. We are currently implementing a GPE funded program in Nigeria in collaboration with UNICEF and the Federal Government of Nigeria, across 6 local governments in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. How has it been spreading?

Through an approach that involves systematically growing our ecosystem through the work that we do with our many collaborators and partners. Our programming carefully considers the complex interactions between each part of the educational ecosystem and synergistically leverages the resources and reach of our collaborators and partners to amplify the work that we do - CSOs, governments, foundations, multilateral agencies, including key partners like Queen's University, Canada, and influential education and gender equity advocates like the UN appointed SDG Advocate, His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II.
