Wished that you were at SXSW EDU 2019? Here is what our Executive Director, Lasse Leponiemi had to say!

Our Executive Director, Lasse Leponiemi spoke at the SXSWedu Conference & Festival 2019, where he shared his thoughts on the importance of student participation in conversations around education.

This week, HundrED’s Executive Director, Lasse Leponiemi spoke at the SXSWedu Conference & Festival, where he shared his thoughts on the importance of student participation in conversations around education.

Lasse, who has a Masters degree in Educational Leadership, is passionate about providing education solutions through innovations. His role at HundrED involves a multidisciplinary approach to support and celebrate education trailblazers and change-makers from around the world. Within a few months, his engrossing report on the financial needs of scaling education innovations will be published on our Research page.

When we talk about education and how the world is changing rapidly we hear about how schools are struggling to keep up. We’re identifying solutions to help bridge that gap.
  • 96% of American educators feel that they are not heard.

  • Nearly 45% of parents feel like they have not been involved enough in their children’s education.

  • Employers want to improve the career prospects of young people in education. It is the role of education to provide young people with the skills that employers are looking for.

In his session “How Can We Make Sure Every Child Flourishes?” Lasse however, places emphasis on a group that is often left out of the conversation - the students.

83% of students want a greater focus on skills that prepare them for their future career.

As per Lasse, “Last year we witnessed how many students in the US took an action towards things they cared about. In order to build active citizenship, we need to foster this movement. And it also gives us an excellent sounding board for efficient learning experiences, when the learning can be connected to things which matter to our students.”

A successful session but a task that requires collective action. At HundrED, we believe everyone has a role to play in improving education, from students to systems leaders, to academics and teachers. It is time to engage all stakeholders, everywhere, to understand that we can utilize deep insights and change from around the world to help students flourish!
