Learning Languages, Cultures and Cuisines while Cooking: Linguacuisine Workshop

Professor Paul Seedhouse explains how the latest digital technology can support learning aspects of languages and their associated cultures and cuisines whilst cooking a meal, which can then be eaten. We discuss the rationale for the free Linguacuisine app, and how using cooking as a task offers opportunities to all viewers who are interested in languages and food. We consider the app’s design principles and how learning is enhanced by having all five senses engaged in a meaningful task with an edible end product.

Then we demonstrate how it works in practice in Newcastle University’s digital kitchen! If you like, use the app yourself to cook along with us in your own kitchen at home during the session, or just watch. We’ll be making crêpes/pancakes with a bilingual French/English recipe. Your smartphone speaks to you in the target language and talks you through the stages of cooking the recipe. It gives you photos, audio, and text of the ingredients and equipment you need to collect then plays you video clips explaining the cooking procedure.

What does the future school become when we embrace the learning that happens everywhere? A UNESCO Futures of Education global discussion

UNESCO’s Futures of Education initiative aims to catalyze global debate and action on how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet. To support the process of co-constructing a global report that will be released in November 2021, many innovators associated with HundrED have run focus groups involving participants from around the planet. One of the questions that has emerged is what the future school could become once we widely embrace the learning that happens everywhere. In the side-event speakers will discuss the insights they gleaned from the consultation sessions they ran over several months – into what the future school should become. In the second half of the event participants will enter breakout rooms to engage with the visions presented and discuss what moves us in the direction of achieving them, what holds us back, and how we tip the balance.

This workshop is about the power of global education networks during COVID-19 and beyond.

Collaborators On Air is a global community of people who are working towards the same goal: ensuring children are healthy and learning, no matter the circumstances.
