Children’s Rights in Conflict: A New Report Highlights Solutions for Safety and Education

When conflicts strike, children’s right to education and their emotional well‐being must be protected. In challenging times, good practices can make a real difference. HundrED and Education Above All Foundation have joined forces to highlight effective emergency solutions in a new video and report.

The war in Ukraine has now dragged on for three years, leaving deep marks on young lives. Displaced children face disruption in schooling and emotional trauma. Yet, similar challenges appear in many conflict zones around the world. This report shows that even in the worst situations, thoughtful education initiatives can help rebuild hope and restore stability.

“During the crisis, the Innovation Development Programme at the Education Above All Foundation developed two unique solutions,” says Aishwarya Shetty from EAA Foundation. “First is the Ukrainian Emergency Response Packages created with the Positive Education Institute. Second is an engaging three-part TV series that were developed by Education Above All and Think Equal Foundation.”

The Ukrainian Emergency Response Packages are practical tools designed to ease the transition for refugee children. They build intercultural understanding between Ukrainian and Polish students, support social-emotional development, and bridge educational gaps. Meanwhile, the TV series, developed for different age groups, delivers social-emotional learning and mental health support to children and families through television and online platforms.

“These solutions were designed for children, youth, and adults to strengthen resilience and help communities cope with crisis,” explains Lasse Leponiemi, Executive Director of HundrED. “Our learnings from these solutions extend beyond Ukraine. They are useful for any crisis-affected context.”

Without access to education, children risk losing their futures.

Both initiatives exemplify how fast, collaborative action can bring tangible support in emergencies. The report and video capture stories of real impact – from integration centres in Polish schools to TV series that have reached over a million children. The projects show that education can be a lifeline, offering both academic continuity and vital emotional support in times of conflict.

We hope these findings are helpful for educators and policy makers around the world in ensuring that every child can experience the safety and stability they need to thrive.
