Your Mind revealed by Your Words

Language is a map of the mind and reflects cognitive development. Based on computational neuroscience, our Brazilian innovation uses storytelling to capture the complexity of narratives and emotional patterns, creating unique indicators of learning and well-being — promoting a holistic vision of human development.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

National and international data show that learning and emotional well-being are directly related: children and adolescents learn better when they are healthy in an integral way. Mobile Brain’s solution was created to provide an evidence-based indicator that integrates these two facets of cognitive development — learning and well-being — giving educators more precise information to guide interventions more effectively. Our goal is to impact education networks at scale, promoting a system more committed to Holistic Education and to creating healthier learning environments for all.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our innovation in practice takes place through a structured story collection protocol, carried out using a digital application specially developed for this purpose. During the session, the child is shown three images with positive emotional content and is invited to spontaneously tell a story for each one, in a welcoming environment, free from interference, and supported by the sensitive mediation of the facilitator. The oral narratives are recorded and automatically transcribed by artificial intelligence, then analyzed using graph theory, which represents the sequence of words as a network of connections. From this analysis, we generate the Narrative Complexity Index and the Emotional Narrative Complexity Index, which help us understand both the cognitive organization of language and the emotional aspects expressed in the stories. This protocol, grounded in over a decade of research in computational neuroscience, combines methodological rigor, advanced technology, and sensitive listening, offering a playful, standardized, and scientifically grounded way to assess children’s cognitive and linguistic development.

How has it been spreading?

We currently have more than 14,000 story collections carried out across Brazil, with operations in multiple sectors: municipal and state school networks, public and private institutions, and partners from the educational third sector. This broad scope of action allows us to assess the effectiveness of the innovation across different educational contexts and, most importantly, within the diversity that characterizes the Brazilian educational landscape.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Over more than a decade of developing the solution, we have advanced our research by adding correlations between the indices and the Brazilian national curriculum — the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC). This has allowed us to establish a stronger dialogue with the educational sector, highlighting possibilities for interventions related to cognitive development in language, as well as aspects connected to Whole-Child Education and the development of socio-emotional competencies.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

Solution implementation
The implementation of the solution is simple and playful. For the protocol to be carried out, it is important that classes and students understand they will be taking part in a storytelling activity. The app is self-instructive and provides all the necessary guidance for its use. However, it does not replace the valuable interaction that only occurs between teacher/applicator and student. Therefore, understanding the protocol and engaging the class are essential steps.
How to Introduce the Activity to the Class
Talk to students in a relaxed way, avoiding terms like “test” or “exam.” Explain that they will play a storytelling game using images, with three different rounds. Encourage creativity, allow questions, and avoid sharing technical details (time, word count) to prevent anxiety. Emphasize that each story is individual and you will only listen, not interfere.
How to Guide the Student Individually
Create a safe environment and explain simply: the student will see three images, one at a time, think of a story, and start after the “3,2,1” countdown. First, they’ll do a voice test. Ensure clear audio by checking microphone position and help only with technical steps. Encourage creativity and details, reinforcing that it’s an easy and fun activity.
What to Avoid During Application
Do not anticipate image content or prepare students with pre-texts. Stories must be spontaneous and original, without interference. If the student stops, only encourage with “what else?”. Avoid mentioning time, word limits, or technical details. Any intervention may compromise the test’s validity.
