Refugio de Sonrisas

place Peru + 1 more

Nurturing dreams, building futures.

In Peru, many children in shelters and low-income areas face limited access to quality education, emotional guidance, and future opportunities. Refugio de Sonrisas is a innovation that brings free workshops in STEM, languages, communication, leadership, mental health, arts, and vocational skills—empowering them to grow with confidence and become active changemakers in their communities.

My goal is to transform education for children and young people in vulnerable communities by providing them with practical skills and knowledge in areas like STEM, art, leadership, and mental health. I want to help them overcome the challenges they face, empowering them to build a better future for themselves and become agents of change in their communities.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

I created Refugio de Sonrisas because I saw firsthand what it means to grow up with limited opportunities. My mother faced many struggles to give me a good education, and thanks to her, I received one. Through her work in rural health centers, I visited communities where children live in even harsher conditions—survivors of poverty, abuse, and loss. I realized they weren’t broken; they were simply not given a chance. I created this project so they could have the tools, confidence, and hope to change their lives—and later, their communities. Every child deserves that chance.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, Refugio de Sonrisas provides free, in-person workshops in shelters and underserved communities across Peru, offering classes in STEM, arts, emotional support, and more. We are also expanding through free virtual programs that reach children and youth across Latin America. At the same time, we train young volunteers—especially from vulnerable backgrounds—to become community leaders, starting in Peru and scaling across the region. Our model empowers both learners and educators to create lasting impact where it's most needed.

How has it been spreading?

We started in Lima and have expanded to Cajamarca. Currently, we are training more leaders to reach additional regions within Peru. Through our virtual programs, we are impacting children and young people across Latin America, reaching over 600 participants each year. We offer both virtual and in-person workshops, and our presence continues to grow on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Additionally, we are establishing partnerships with other organizations interested in our free services and supporting us with their outreach efforts.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

If you'd like to get involved or try our programs, the first step is to reach out to us through our social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where you can find more information about upcoming workshops and opportunities. You can also visit our website to register for virtual or in-person sessions, or contact us directly to become a volunteer and help spread our impact. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and locations who are passionate about making a difference in their communities.
