In the heart of every child is a desire to be cherished and understood. INSIGHTS envisions a world where each child is recognized as a unique individual and is supported in reaching his or her optimal social, emotional, and academic development. Our mission is to support children's development and assist their parents and teachers in using responsive strategies that match each child’s temperament.
The INSIGHTS parent and teacher programs can be conducted in person or as a hybrid program with 6 self-paced lessons and 7 facilitated sessions used to apply the content to individual children. The lessons include professionally made videos with actors who demonstrate different children's temperaments and their dilemmas, handouts, interactive games, and open-ended questions. The parents and teachers learn to recognize different children's temperaments and then to apply strategies that match each child's temperament.
Teachers can be taught remotely and supported in conducting the children's program in their classroom. The children's classroom curriculum consists of ten 30-minute sessions that include puppets that represent different temperaments, videos, workbooks, and flashcards. The children learn what is easy for one puppet (or individual) is more challenging for another. They also use the puppets to help them think critically when resolving their daily dilemmas.
INSIGHTS has been used by a variety of communities/cultures. The intervention was developed in under-resourced urban schools and has been conducted in rural communities in Nebraska and Appalachia. In addition INSIGHTS was brought to Jamaica when the developer was a Fulbright scholar.
INSIGHTS has been tested in multiple randomized clinical trials funded by the US government. The results show that INSIGHTS reduces children's behavior problems and increases their academic skills as well as enhances parenting and classroom management.
