A Ghanaian society where all children have equal access to quality education, and a love of reading and learning is instilled in every student.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Little to no access to educational materials and lack of healthy competition in the schools made students feel reluctant to study because they are already in rural communities that see less of development and feel like they may end up in deprived situations. There was the need to get them actively involved in education and be hopeful of opportunities that awaits them through education.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We host a number of students from different schools in the basic stages (Primary one to Junior High School) in a competition. We pick up reading materials from required text books and test students ability to read and understand what the text says. Then give prizes to all participants ranging from textbooks, story books, exercise books, notebooks, stationery and certificates of participation.
Students from all invited schools also join the session to cheer their various colleagues and are also refreshed after the session.

How has it been spreading?

Through social media and referrals from other schools interested in the program

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

Book Reading Project
1. Speak to school leaders and sell the idea to them
Visit the communities and speak to the various school leaders about the program. Pitch what is in it for the students, the schools and the school leaders themselves. This will spike their interest in the program.
Authorization
2. Write letters to appropriate municipal authorities for approval
Get the authorization to host the program in the community since you will be halting almost a day's work in the school. This prevents issues and challenges from district or municipal leaders. It also helps you secure funds and aid for the program
Sponsorship
3. Write sponsorship letters to aid in the purchasing of resources to be used for the program
Seek for aid to have a bigger pool of resources to increase donations to be given to the schools participating after the program.
Volunteers
4. Get volunteers to handle each aspect of organization.
You have to get different people handling different aspect of the organization of the program. This will help monitor effectiveness and progress with the planning and coordination as well as the aid that comes through
Mentors
Get keynote speakers and mentors to inspire students in their education
It is necessary to have mentors available to give coaching lessons in career development to these students to help guide their decisions as they grow and to inspire them to strive for better
Main Program
Host Program
Gather the participating schools and students to venues and have a schedule to follow through for the program and give awards and donations to students ad schools after the program
