Welbin Index

Make every school a well-being promoting school

There is no standardized data about the health and well-being conditions of schools globally. This affects program design, implementation, evaluation and, ultimately, children’s and teachers’ lives. We created a solution: The Welbin Index, a validated universal tool developed to support schools in makeing better and more informed decisions about school well-being.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The Welbin Index was created by Dr. Daniel Tobón, Adriana González and Andrea Arenas. This happened in 2019 (right before the Covid-19 Pandemic) after Daniel finished a research on health promoting schools in Latin America, where he realized there was no data available of the well-being conditions in schools in the region, like water availability and practices for mental health promotion.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Welbin Index is a validated and universal self-assessment tool directed to school principals. They, in consultation with representatives of the school community (students, families, teachers, counselors, and leaders) answer a 45-minute questionnaire to get an immediate, free, and confidential report with the Welbin Index overall score as well as scores on key thematic areas: mental health; school climate & inclusion, healthy lifestyle, safety, and sexuality and gender equality. The report includes recommended action roadmaps to improve school management for well-being in every area. Scores are presented on a scale from 0 to 100, which represents the level to which a school meets the highest standards for school health and well-being.

How has it been spreading?

The Welbin Index was first launched in Colombia in July 2020 (in the middle of the Covid-19 Pandemic) and, in just seven weeks, delivered quick assessment reports and recommendations to 1,000 schools (35% rural and 70% public) across +300 municipalities in Colombia. Since then, the Welbin Index has delivered quick assessments to +5,500 schools from Colombia, Jamaica, Panama, and other countries, mainly in Latin America, thanks to partnerships with }Ministries of Education and local governments, UNICEF and other UN agencies, NGO's, and school and principal associations.

In 2021, Welbin joined efforts with the Laboratory on Education Economy from the top school: Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. The two organizations have led the implementation every year.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

The Welbin Index is free and available in 5 languages: Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, and Hindi.

Implementation steps

We want every school in the world to be a well-being-promoting school. With the Welbin Index, every school will be able to get a free and rapid assessment to understand where they stand in terms of their conditions and practices to promote well-being. With this assessment, every school will be ready to make better and more informed decisions to improve.
Click on the button "Calculate your Welbin Index"
This will take you to an online questionnaire with all the instructions. Gather representatives (5-8 people) from your school community and block 45-60 mins to answer all questions. We recommend that you have handy: the school's identification number, student information (i.e sex and gender distribution, number of students with disabilities), staff characteristics (i.e. number of counselors), infrastructure characteristics (i.e. number of functional toilets).
Get your immediate result and key well-being indicators.
You will get an immediate, free and confidential report as a screenshot when you finish the questionnaire. A copy of this brief report will be sent to the email address you registered in the questionnaire.
