For many families, the cost of private tuition is prohibitive – it’s simply too expensive to spend thousands of dollars per year per course on private tutoring – while for others, there just isn’t anything available in their local area.
That’s why we’ve made it our mission to not only empower every person to succeed at school and reach their full potential, no matter their circumstances.
We believe that: real outcomes + real people = real change. And the end result of all this is what one partner has described as, "an evidence-based, curriculum-aligned MasterClass for kids."
By real outcomes, we mean that we'll design quality programs using real learning principles rather than traditional "learning by listening" and memorising textbook content.
By real people, we mean that we believe in a "learn from everywhere" approach that enables students to connect concepts beyond the theory and into the real world of work. We do this by partnering with working professionals who use the same course concepts to make an impact through their work every day.
This leads to real change. Good grades are neat, but they don't mean much unless students know what they're going to do with it. We help students and parents rethink what's possible out of high school, connect the dots between school grades and career goals, and take actionable steps to achieve success.
upstart is still in the validation phase, and the plan is to launch in New South Wales, Australia by 2024 in alignment with the rollout of a new curriculum.
The short-term goal for us is to trial our product with 100 students and understand: (a) what are the key value drivers for upstart; (b) what are the key barriers to entry for low-access students; and (c) and what are the areas where we need to bring new partners in to set up student success (e.g. governments, other NFPs, educational organisations such as schools and universities).
