Schools are facing a rise in student behaviors that are having an impact on learning. Students exhibit these behaviors in a variety of ways, which are generally classified as either verbal or physical. Behaviors range in intensity, duration, and severity. These behaviors often hinder school staff from educating students, since much of their time is spent managing behaviors.
The Power of Three (P3) helps elementary schools create a common language & processing strategy that can be used with all students. The first lessons of P3 are tier I instruction and taught school-wide. The remaining lessons are designed for tier II students who have been identified as having needs. P3's lessons help school staff teach students a new way to process their thoughts & emotions, to weigh the outcomes of their actions, and to accept the consequences, both good & bad, for the choices they make.
P3 allows staff to create a common language & philosophy for helping students understand and process their “big feelings” so they can make positive choices that will enable them to become successful.
P3 is designed to work in tandem with a school’s Response to Intervention (RTI), also known as a school’s Pyramid of Interventions, specifically focusing on addressing the behavioral concerns of RTI rather than the academic concerns.
The Power of Three is just beginning to get off the ground supporting SEL in schools in Minnesota! This past year, we piloted P3 in two urban schools and one rural school, and saw great success for students. We are excited to pilot with more districts in 2022-23 and work towards CASEL evaluation in the summer of 2023. Our goal is for every student to feel emPOWERed and supported, and for every school to have the materials they need to provide a successful SEL experience!
