About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created the Parent PlayBox innovation out of a profound recognition of the critical importance of early childhood development (ECD) and the significant role caregivers play in shaping a child's future. Across Southern and East Africa, millions of children face barriers to accessing quality early education and developmental support, particularly in marginalized communities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Parent PlayBox, unfolds through a structured process involving two key components: the kits and the training. Firstly, the Parent PlayBox comprises carefully curated kits containing a wealth of age-appropriate activities, play prompts, and educational resources. These kits are designed to cater to children from birth to six years old, covering essential areas such as cognitive skills, language development, fine and gross motor skills, and socio-emotional well-being. Each kit is meticulously assembled to provide parents and caregivers with the necessary tools to facilitate their children's early learning and development at home.

Secondly, parents and caregivers are trained in areas such as: playful and positive parenting, the importance of play and brain development, early learning milestones, and ECD, as well as the importance of nurturing care and responsive parenting.

How has it been spreading?

The Parent PlayBox, operates through strategic partnerships with implementation partners such as NGOs, NPOs, and grassroots organizations. We provide comprehensive ToT training on the Parent PlayBox to these partners, alongside the actual kits- empowering them to implement the program within their communities effectively.

Once trained, our implementation partners distribute Parent PlayBoxes to parents and caregivers in their communities. Our implementation partners receive continuous support and mentoring from Kids Collab and Learn to Play, ensuring that they have the necessary tools and expertise to effectively support parents and caregivers in their communities.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Potential partners can reach out to us to express an interest in running a small pilot within a community. Through the pilot, you'll have the opportunity to experience firsthand how the Parent PlayBox initiative can benefit your community or organization and make a positive impact.
