The Museum Kit Project

A cultural heritage education program with a comprehensive and unique experience design.

The aim of the project is to develop cultural awareness and a sense of belonging to cultural elements and to bring added value in fostering socio-cultural cohesion by creating curated contents about the cultural heritage elements for younger generations. One of the expected impacts of the project is to foster a culture of appreciation, protection and preservation of cultural heritage elements.

Through The Museum Kit Project, we hope to see that heritage and museums will no longer be intangible concepts in the curriculum that teachers and students are reluctant to acknowledge and internalize. Through this training and material, we aim to ensure that school groups are equipped to make meaningful visits and that they understand and appreciate the cultural references of the subject matter.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

This innovation was created to build the lacking capacity and educational tools to properly experience museums and to methodically teach cultural and natural heritage in Turkey as part of the education system.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

An official protocol regarding the Museum Kit Project has been signed between the Ministry of National Education and The Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The museum and cultural heritage education program created within the scope of the project is accepted to be implemented in the e-learning platform (EBA) of the Ministry of National Education as a supporting program for the social and cultural education curricula. It is officially recognized as a national project by the General Directorate of Innovation and Educational Technologies of the ministry and it is available free of charge to every participating teacher throughout Turkey.

How has it been spreading?

Since the program's integration to the Educational Informatics Network (EBA) of the ministry, teachers from all over Turkey can apply to the project's online teacher training. Out of 159,152 teachers who applied, 81,317 teachers have successfully completed one of the four trainings and started to put the kit in use. Through the teachers who completed the training, the project reached over 4,000,000 students from all around Turkey.

Implementation steps

Teacher Training

Teacher training program is in distance-learning format and prepared together with the Ministry of National Education. Through the Educational Informatics Network (EBA) teachers from all over Turkey can apply to the Museum Kit Project’s online teacher training. In the first phase of the two-phased training, teachers learn about the contents and methodology of the kits. In the second phase, the teachers are taken on guided tours of the museum/site. The 10 hour-training is also offered online.

The Teacher's Learning Process

The teacher studies the entire content of the kit and checks it out all the content on the EBA platform. During the lessons, examples are also demonstrated. The teachers visit the museum on their own at least once. If the museum is not in the city where the teacher lives, teachers can digitally access the contents and instructions whenever they want, free from spatial limitations.

Pre-Visit Process (In-Class)

Before the museum experience, 6 lessons and related activities are held in class by the teachers and students. Activities at the end of each lesson are completed in class or given as homework.

The teacher fills the Pre-Museum Experience Evaluation Form available on the EBA platform.

Interactive Museum Experience (On-Site/ Online)

The museum visit takes place on-site or through dijital tools by the teachers and students. Museum cards (museum guide), custom created maps and visual cards included in the museum kits are used during the museum visit. With all the background information learnt in class, the museum experience becomes more meaningful and engaging.

The teacher fills the Museum Experience Evaluation Form available on the EBA platform.

Post-Visit Process (In-Class)

Engaging activities and games for students take place following the museum visit. Activities and games reinforce creative thinking skills, peer communication, problem solving skills alongside creative writing and drawing skills.

Assessment Form 3

After completing the whole process, the teacher fills out the project evaluation form available on the EBA platform. So far, more than 116.000 assessment forms have been filled by the teachers.
